So tomorrow is my last packet of smokes,

So....my good lady has offered the incentive that if I quit smoking and stick to it she'll pay for my flight to Tenerife so I can play Amarilla Golf & Country club the place my golfing adventures started. (anyone else been?)

Health and money are something we'd all like a little more of so it's a no brainer. Throw in the fact my pal lives overlooking the 11th fairway so I don't have to pay for my accommodation I cant think of better motivation.

Saving a tenner a day at least and spending it on the odd bit of golf gear or fancy course outing is gonna be great so gotta convince myself I can do it.

She's a clever lady to use my obsession with golf as motivation I'm sure she wont mind a few occasions to fill 6 hrs whilst I'm knocking it round if I'm healthier and wealthier!

A few more meals out and a better stocked Christmas stocking she'll be just as happy as me :)

HERE WE GO....

Good luck with the quitting !! I'm the worst quitter in the world, just can't seem to do it. I've tried the golf motivational techniques but alas even they weren't strong enough !!

Are you just planning on going cold turkey ?

I have one more night shift tomorrow night so I'm all gee'd up to try agian from Monday.

Good luck to you...

Cheers Hendo, she's off out to get me one of those vapour pipe things tomorrow. Get on it Monday £400 month I could save.... thats a Belfry season ticket in a few months!

Good luck if you do 3 months max Ive done before...

show me the way to Amarillla

It's no funny how much we spend on killing ourselves !!!

Deffo gonna give it another try. I have the efag thing but it seems that every time I try it I end up with some sort of cold/flu/chest infection. Thick on Monday when I get up I'm just gonna try cold turkey.

Think if I do it then my prize to me will be getting properly fitted for a new set of bats.

Lets do this !!!!

good luck buddy

ive been off them 13 months, done the ecigs etc.. tbh you need to be free from the addiction of nicotine, so cold turkey is best.

i done it, and im the worst in the world for will power... itll only work if you REALLY want to stop

good luck again, hope you do well

Go on mate - you know you can do it. I did it 6 years ago and saved a shed load of money which has paid for loads of golf treats.

Ecigs were not around when I did it, but I'm still tempted to say don't. Just go cold turkey. But don't have the "that's it, that's my last fag, I've quit" attitude. Always be "between cigarettes". I found it easier on the willpower to think to myself that I could manage to go "another hour" or "till lunchtime". Thinking about quitting completely is dispiriting and it's easy to think "God, I'll never do it" - especially when you're desperate for a smoke. So you crack. But you can persude yourself to go another half hour. 9:00am 6 January 2008 I decided to try to stop smoking and to see how long I could last - I wasn't even sure I could last the morning and 6 and a bit years later, I'm still wondering. But the good bit is I neither want or need a smoke now... And I can afford loads of decent golf kit .

I gave up ten years ago using patches and the little inhalator you get.

Would recommend the patches

why not try vaping or electric cigs? i was the worst quitter in the world, in 20 years i had tried:

Allan carr book (plus the second one for stubborn quitters)
Allan car sessions (x3 then got my money back as it failed!)
Gum
Inhalers
patches

champix (made me really grumpy and ill)
cold turkey

The only thing that worked "for ME" was electric cigs, been on them now for 9 months and would not dream of having a normal cig now. OK I am still addicted to nicotene, however i am getting it without all the nasty stuff!

Good luck guys, people that have never smoked will not understand how hard it really is to make the leap into stopping smoking.

champix (made me really grumpy and ill)
You're not the first person to say that - I think there's definitely a link between Champix and depression.

I gave up cold turkey almost two years ago, you've got to want to become a non-smoker more than anything in the world. I was doing 25-30 a day, but never saw myself as a smoker, bizarrely!

It was made easier for me, as I knew I was becoming a Dad for the first time. There's no better motivation than that!

Never been a smoker myself so cannot fully appreciate how hard it would be to stop. Good luck in your quest to stop fellas, you will be much healthier for it.

My Father-in-law was "cured" about 30 years ago. His doc said that if he didn't quit then he would lose at least one of his legs within the next couple of years, he stopped there and then. He also had one of his lungs removed ten years ago due to cancer caused by smoking. He is seventy now, and whilst he won't be running the London Marathon at least he is still with us.

If you want to stop then that is the start. Good luck.

There is a senior who had a heart attack last November time.

He normally goes in a guys buggy but recently has been having a little walk behind the rest of the group and going into trees etc - he has been going for sly cigs ! - the guy who drives the buggy went mental at him and told him he isnt allowed to go in the buggy anymore due to his smoking.

We were playing on Wed and he was in our group and he again kept hanging back with his trolley and everytime he was having a cig.
He came to one tee and started talking about meeting his cardio this week - one of my FC said that " will you tell him about your constant smoking"

People have now told him he either gives up smoking as he has had one warning in life or he finds another early morning swindle to play in.

Cant comprehend why you would continue to smoke after such a health warning.

A similar thing happened to one of our seniors not long ago. Whilst the medics were carting him off to hospital in the ambulance they asked if he was a smoker. He said that he used to be but had quit. When they asked how long for his reply was 10 minutes ago. He was true to his word as he hasn't, touched a cigarette since.

I can understand the addiction but will never understand why you would carry on smoking after such a health scare.

Its why i had no sympathy for George Best - he drank one liver dry and then when they gave him a new one he did the same again.

I just struggle to be sympathetic towards people when they die from O/D on drugs or drink etc - like the outpouring of grief when Winehouse died !

 and you need motivation ?????????????????

Must be about 8 quid a packet now

I quit when i came back from Cyprus - it was a quid a packet over there - was about 2 quid a packet in the uk.

Giving up smoking is the hardest thing I have ever done. But I have been clear since mid NOvember and really do not want one anymore. Like others I was probably getting through about 10 packs a week when you put in the extra you smoke when going out and on the course. So basically I would be wasting about £350 a month on cancer sticks.

I was playing golf with Region3 last week and tried out the i25 3W. I was in 2 minds whether to buy it or not, then I thought I was spending this twice this a month on smoking and did not think twice about that, so I bought it.......

Smoking is a difficult thing to stop and having been there I know what it is like. But stop smoking and treat yourself to something new every month to make it worth the effort.

If like me you probably spend the same as a premium driver every month, has anyone ever thought about it like that?

1st month: new driver
2nd month: fairways and rescues
3rd & 4th month: get some new irons
5 month: fancy new bag
6th month: a shiny new leccie trolley to put it all on.
7th month: Galvin Green waterproofs

So basically in 7 months of not smoking you could replace everything and even have a set of GG waterproofs for the cold, wet, windy days of the winter league.

Good luck to all people trying to quit. I was a quitting champion. Every Monday. Went to a hypnotist oct 27th 2011. Best £50 I ever spent. One visit and sorted for life.

I'm so glad I've never been interested with smoking as from what I've seen quitting is just a nightmare, a bloke at work had to rearrange his house including putting his kettle in his bedroom to try and help break the cycle of his day... He lasted a few days!!!

I am going tenerife in Sept though

shouldnt a smoking thread be in OOB?

Smoked since school (long time ago)- trouble was I love the whole experience especially with a drink.

A warm summers evening after a round of golf, BBQ, cold beers and a satisfying smoke.

Stopped 19 months ago cold turkey as it is just stupid, plain stupid.

Still miss it, still crave it. Will never go back to it, it's had it's time, now it's my turn.

thanks for all the advice and support folks

it really is a no brainer the obvious benefits financially and health but even though every smoker is aware of this it just shows how hard it is to quit even with those incentives.

good luck to everyone else in the quest it's not easy but it's worth it

show me the way to Amarilla
