Question

Hi,

I am relatively new to the game and the pro who i am having lessons off is encouraging me to lead the down swing with the rotation of the hips.... I dont know enough yet to say if this is generic or he is trying to get me to do something i am not yet doing !!!

Do you want to know from a technical perspective or do you want to practice something?
The answer is almost the same, but the feeling is important to understand so the language might be different.

Start Of The Downswing
By Hank Haney (edited by RG)

"When you get the golf club back to the top of the swing the first move down is the transferring of your weight. It really should start from the ground up. Your feet start to shift. The weight shifts from your right heel to your left toe and as that happens your arms are lowering your club down on the plane.....It is a lowering of the hands and arms as you shift the weight forward and start to rotate your lower body.....The lower body starts to move, your hands and arms start to drop, and the shoulders are staying back just a little bit to get the golf club down in front of you.

Now how should YOU start your downswing? Well it depends on your ballflight. If you are someone who is hooking it too much you probably need to get the golf club out in front of you by rotating your arms down this way. If you are someone who is slicing it too much you need to hold your shoulders back, let your hands and arms release the golf club to square it up. So people that hook, club in front, then turn the body through. People that slice, feel your shoulders stay back, release with your hands and arms to get the clubface to square up. I know that if you start the downswing correctly you have a better chance of hitting a good shot."

Make of it what you will, personally, I just move back towards the target and do my damnedest to not cast it or lose the "L" between my arms and shaft!! :(

Dave,

Not sure what you are going to make of my drunken octopus swing then. Think you PPP might be proper plonker playing

Still it was a little more encouraging yesterday. Played a mate in a hastily arranged roll up to take advantage of the weather and got 35 points with a triple bogey 6 0n one par 3 (hit 1st OB and missed green with the reload) and a triple bogey 7 at 16th (it was raining - no waterproofs was hurrying so dumped 3rd in bunker hit out short of green and hit crap chip). On the plus side only had 31 putts.

Ball striking still inconsistent and driving not very good (missed most of my drives with straight block or high fade) but I'm planning to get out on the range this week. Have a fair idea where the problem lies but with the weather today and my recent health issues not had the chance to put the work in

In my case "Pretend Pro Pratting about".

They closed my course today....so only a range trip....my PPP was well messed up....well, the path bit anyway!!

Hitting it great, just got to sort out the timing/turn.
Also learned a new shot......35 yard "snowball" lob wedge.....fun, fun, fun!!

Karl, my pro is completely disecting and rebuilding my swing (it has not been a pretty sight, very definitely X-certificate). He too is promoting the start of the downswing from the hips.

For a while on Saturday it was working well, hitting nice and cleanly - then I stopped to think about what I was doing instead of just doing it. Back to the drawing board.

Starting with the hips is a great transitional move, but it takes a lot of timing to get right consistently and it can easily lead to back problems if you're not super fit and flexible.

I'm with Dave that the simple answer is to swing from the ground up and get your weight back to the left foot. I prefer to feel like I'm gripping the turf harder with my left foot then just turn into a strongly posted left leg. I've found the hips take care of themselves.

Here's a word from God....(not the real God - Tiger!!)

"On the downswing, the sequence of motion is from the ground up. First you shift your weight to your left leg, then you turn your hips"........."the hands and arms come last"

Interesting description......If I left my arms doing nothing but moving back to the front foot (left) and turning the hip before anything....I'm not sure I could make it work...

must be the difference in swing speed that does it. at my leisurely pace the bottom would have stopped long before the top started, though the bit in the middle would still be oscillating!
