Thinking of approaching the committee of my club to organise a putting competition.

Thoughts?

Format?

Let me know what you think.

Ash!!

Independent competition at the club. Nothing to do with GM or affiliation.

Also, I didn't mention a time, it will be within the golfing season and i'm planning it for april/may next year and to run annualy.

Some string, 9 holes in the putting green and a few interesting "obstacles" should do the trick.

Usually something to go under adds interest, use your imagination and a small budget to make it fun

Why not?

Not everything has to have a GM twist to it you know.

Why not ask if you can get a couple of pins cut on each green with designated starting points and a stroke comp.

Hi Chris,

I'm good mates with the head greenkeeper as I worked on the staff while I was finishing in uni. So prepping the greens with multiple holes is a definite option.

Also, i'll be preparing a document to present that will encompass many things including protection of surfaces.

Interesting you say this about obstacles.

I am possibly going to try and make it a serious and competitive annual event where it is regarded as a prestigous competitiong to win.

Do you think a fun event it the better way to go?

Mainly the idea came about (nothing to do with GM putter comp) as I have looked at the club competitions over the summer and these days its mainly 4BBB, team events, medal and strokeplay with the odd fun events chucked in and it got me thinking about how a properly organised putting comp provides a complete level playing field for all at the club. Men, women, 79 year olds to 18 year olds, it is all fair game and I reckon the older chaps will give us young bucks a run for our money as there are some chaps i'va played with who are superb putters.

Anyway, rambling now so i'll wait for more responses.

Ash!!

Thanks for the responses so far and i'll continue with preparing a plan for the competition I have in mind.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Sounds very interesting and liking the idea of a competition focusing on the most important part of the game.
What I wouldn't give to put like sned did today!
Please post how it works out

Hi Dan,

I will keep you updated on the progress.

Report is nearly written and i've used software from work to help with designs to include in the report to give clarity and effect to the inevitable committee questions.

I've gone for the serious type of competition which will as you say focus heavily on the most important part of the game.

Initial stages are over three greens. 4 putts per green from locations of 10, 20, 30 and 40 ft. Holed putt 20 points, inside 12" 10 points and inside 20" 5 points. The top 30 (approx) scorers over the three greens will then go into the matchplay stage which is yet to be planned.

are you also planning on doing a driving competition? and a chipping competition? and an approach shots competition? or are you just singling out putting and neglecting the others?

My grandmother in law is a life time member at Moor Park, her house backs onto the course and she has always been a member as were/are lots of the family. She is 93 and a couple of years ago they had a putting comp, she beat a 17 year old to the win... Nice little story that alowed her to keep her hand in at that time.

I like the idea of a competition such as this, but I have always thought it would be quite tricky to have a level playing field unless everyone plays in isolation. The advantage is given to the players waiting for their turn as a read can be made of the previous putt. Whilst I accept you still have to hit it on the right line with the correct speed, the person first up is giving away valuable info for those playing next. If it's just a bit of fun, then no problem but if prizes are involved the gamesmanship begins.

Best of luck to you though, it's good to be proactive!

Cheers ash I look forward to it. Snaphook raises a good point regarding the possible advantage of second and subsequent putters, do you think this will be a factor to consider?
At our captains skins evening we had a putt off to reduce the numbers going forward to the next hole, It did look like some people may have been helped seeing earlier putts.best of luck with it.

This has been thought of and the greens I am planning on using will definitely provide a read if there was a queue formed.

So measures are to be put in place:

The plan is to initially allow players a few minutes to circulate the external area of the green (strictly no access unless in live play) to have a look at the putts then move their way into a holding marquee of some sort.My parents own two 3x9m marquees which would hold plenty of people in a queue formaton and i'm sure I could get another very easily. This is how I would tackle the reading of eachothers lines element.

What do ya think?

This is a fantastic story and spurs me on even more.

Would love one of the real eldery members to get right in the mix at the end just like this.
