Just back from my lunch break and a quick visit to American Golf. Went with the intention of trying the new Nike Concept out of curiosity more than anything else, but the delivery person had obviously had a seizure when he saw them as they had none in stock. Anyway, whilst I was there I thought I'd try a few other putters and found that I do get more stability with a larger putter head on short putts.

Short putts are the area I struggle with and have occasionally thought maybe I should have got a mallet. Thing is they have always put me off and I prefer a blade.

My Scotty has changeable weights in the head and when I bought it I asked for the 15gram weights as opposed to the standard 10gram. I am now wondering whether I'd get more stability with a slightly heavier head by getting the 20gram weights.

So just wondered if we had an Ethan for putters on here that would know what impact this would have on the club or if anyone else has dabbled with their putter headweight. Ta muchly

Have had one or two changable weight putters. Only really see the differance on long putts or slow/fast greens. More weight the slower the green etc. Just really means you can keep the same putting stroke.

Tiger, I've not had a putter with adjustable weights, but did swap to a heavier putter last season (got a TM Corza Ghost mallet to replace my old Ping My Day heel and toe style). I find it a lot easier to get a pendulum feel into the stroke with the heavier head and it has helped my shorter putts.

I also find it easier to stroke rather than "hit" the longer putts as well. A lot of this depends on green speeds I suppose. If you are normally on quick greens, maybe the extra weight is less helpful. Slower greens, I think the heavier putter head helps.

Sorry that's not exactly empirical evidence, but hope it is some help.

Monty.

Thanks guys. Been over to look at Mr Maltby and have just thought that my new grip is heavier than my old one which will have affected my swingweight. Also reflected that my greens are slow and I do leave a lot of putts short. Got a lesson Saturday so will raise it with my pro and might make the purchase. Thanks again

I know what you mean about preferring a blade style. I've had all sorts including an Itsy Spider and tinkered with the odyseey wite ice #9 last year. The spider looked horrid and to be honest I was embarrased using it. The #9 gave me more stability and was great on quicker greens but I really struggled with long putts on wet winter greesn with the soft insert so wandered back to my original Anser 2. I like the firmer feel of the TM Corsa or Fontana and these would represent the best of both worlds, a firmer face and more stability.

I did try a Heavy Putter at Silvermere and as the name suggests these are hefty pieces but they theory behind them is sound and the head doesn't wander on short ones. Mind you I think you'd know you had one in the bag after carrying for 18 holes

I have a TM Ghost Spider which came with two 4gram weights, and changed these to 10gram and then to 12gram weights. I think the stability and feel is better but may be just kidding myself. I was fitted to 31" length so this may have been why I needed the extra weight.
