Playing in Captains night at Treloy on Friday i changed the weights in my Rife putter as i was coming up short on my putts after 3 holes, having played a couple of rounds at Newquay in the week where the greens were a lot quicker than those at Treloy (different course i am a Member) One of our group said it wasnt allowed during the round as i changed the profile of my club, is this true ?

The weights screw into 2 bars on the back of the putter and do not alter the look of it.

Taken from the R & A Rules of Golf:

4-2. Playing Characteristics Changed and Foreign Material

a. Playing Characteristics Changed During a stipulated round, the playing characteristics of a club must not be purposely changed by adjustment or by any other means.

I would be inclined to agree with the guy who challenged you as you have 'changed the playing characteristics'.

My understanding is that it is illegal to alter a club once the game has started.
i.m.o. someone was right to suggest this, and, yes....you cheated.
I'm no expert on rules though....especially this sort of thing.
I wouldn't alter weights on a driver or putter mid-game....it's hardly in the spirit.

I've gave you an answer already!

Read it from the R&A Rules of Golf. You altered the playing characteristics of one of your clubs mid-round and it is against the rules.

The penalty for which is disqualification from the event!

Cheated may sound harsh, but in the cold light of day it is essentially what you have done

Oooops!!!! I certainly wont be making that mistake again (or posting a question )
My public hanging is at 5am tomorrow and i am having Chicken as my last meal whilst singing `The green green grass of home` Ta Ta. ;)

Yes you have to watch them on here at the mo a bit quick to jump down your neck

You were wrong as Keefg pointed out (cheating was a bit harsh)but it may be worth having a look through the rule book to stop things like that in the future.

I would say cheating is knowingly breaking the rules.
In this instance a newcomer to the game has a putter you can adjust the weights in and does so during a game without realising he is breaking the rules.
If he had run behind a bush and done it out of sight so the playing partners couldn't see, that would be cheating.
I know Dermot to be a man of honour and of the highest repute so I assume he will take his punishment as such.
BTW, bad news is ...it's not hanging in this instance, it's DQ and beheading. The good news is I'll throw a copy of next month's GM in the basket and you can read it later, you naughty boy :)

Cheers Bob, might stick my V-Easy down the back of my jumper to deflect the axemans blow on my neck. I did run into the bushes but only for a quick `orange` pee, its the Berocca you know, ask Smiffy. ;0)

At the price they charge, I've stopped using 'em!!

I've got two weights stuck on my putter. Self adhesive ones that our workshops use when they balance tyres. One of them dropped off during a round the other week. I didn't realise it had done so, and noticed towards the end of my round. Concensus of opinion was that I was guilty as charged of altering my club, although I didn't do anything knowingly...

Cheated RG Dave, thats a bit harsh. Genuine question and hopefully get an answer, but `cheated` :D

I hope you accept my apologies, I didn't mean it that way.

i.m.o. you were let down by those playing with you (unless they were equally unaware of the rules). In golf, better safe than sorry. If I was playing and someone in my group made even the slightest suggestion of me doing something "maybe" wrong, I'd either reverse the action (in a case like this) or continue and accept my fate on arrival back into the clubhouse.....

Question is, I have lead tape on the bottom of my 3w and 5w. I have noticed that it is now missing from my 3w. It will have altered the club mid round, but I don't know which round. For how many comps should I dq myself? I know it was there at Christmas....

Does this mean there's a chance you didn't win the RA meet then?

Wonder if I'll sneek into third with 32 points now....I'll let you fight it out with Smiffy for first place.

:D :D :D :p

It's ok Smithy, you've done nothing wrong :D. I believe that if the characteristics of a club are altered during a round accidently (but not through missuse), you can either continue to use the club in it's altered stated or repair it if possible (i.e replace the tape).

Only if it changes whilst playing a shot not if it just 'falls off'.....

Hehe... actually nothing for the next 18 months can be submitted for handicap, your wife has to be sold into slavery and your car keys posted to any forum member at random. You also go directly to jail and do not collect £200 :p
