Putter over-grip?

Having mooched around the golf shops for sale stuff, I've noticed that I picked up quite a few putters with a thicker wrap-around type of grip, similar to a tennis racket. I have to say this type of "fat" grip feels good in the hands.

I was wondering if there is any reason to not use tennis grip tape and wrap it around one or two of my putter collection and try it out. I have 3 rolls of tape and thought I might accessorise one or two for fun. Can't see they'd be illegal and it might even make the grips on one or two a bit better in the wet.

Would using a sticky rubber tape over the top ruin the factory grip for future use? and could there be any logical benefit given I liked the feel of the few I tried?

Or is it a daft idea?

I'd probably check the R&A wording on grips and artificial aids but if it conforms it would be an interesting experiment. I think a large part of a putters usefulness comes from the way it sits and feels in your hand. If you feel like you can use it, I find that confidence grows and you make more putts.

Yes...and I was thinking about that lovely, but unperfected stick that is the MacGregor "Fat lady swings" that I bought to R.A.
I never got useful with it because the grip went all slimy in the rain!!!

DO IT!!!

When I swapped putters with ForeForTheday, my new spider came with a thick grip and I love it. Grip it and rip it putter style!

Ive seen what you mean and for me, a fat grip on a golf putter reduces feel. It may feel nice in the hand and may look good but its like playing shove halfpenny wearing a boxing glove.

Good point....

I've done one already and it's good so far. Also, it can be removed as only the top and bottom is glued on.

t.b.h. the tape I have is a over-grip, not a full padded tennis tape. It's less the a mm. thick and has a great feel on an un-gloved hand.
