Hi guys, been reading up on torching or flaming a putter on golf WRX. has anyone ever tried it?

for those who have never heard of flaming it's basically a process of stripping the finish off a putter using coke / vinegar solution and heating it with a blowtorch until it gets a gun blue / oil can type of finish.

I have just bought a scotty cameron Newport teryllium thats a bit knackered but only £30 so I'm going to try it, no great loss if it deosnt work. I've also got a studio design 2.5 that I use at the moment which is in decent nick but i allowed it to rust so maybe give that a going over if it works well. Seen the results of a few putters and some wedges which look pretty cool.

Any advice appreciated, going to take photos at every stage and will post the results when done.

Yep, keep us posted. I am sure you have done your homework but I know from watching gunsmith programs and bits that "blueing" is not as easy as it might seem. Be careful with temperatures!

Careful!

Being different metal, the (mainly Copper) insert expands at a different rate to the rest, so could well pop out with the heat involved.

And if it's the 2nd Generation, the Polymer around/under the insert will melt!

This man speaketh sense!

Thanks for the advice, fairly certain it's 1st gen, was planning on removing the insert first and giving it a polish. hoping to give it a go this weekend

Looking good so far, like the idea, just need to find a good cheap putter that needs some tlc.

Would be useful to state the process as well as the pics please, I.e what used, how long etc etc

couldn't wait so started the process in my lunch hour, basically filled the jug with toilet duck (quicker and more effective than coca-cola) left it for about 5 hours and they came out all shiny and silver in colour. the next morning i used the blowtorch to heat the putters when they were in the vice, took about 8 minutes of heat before the blue / purple colour started to show (pics to follow) I then sprayed with WD40 which dampened the result a bit, I am planning to clean off the oil so the colours are more vibrant, used the studio design yesterday and had a much crisper feel to it and a clearer ping sound off the face probably because the the rust had been removed from the face. I am planning to re-do the paintfill in white at some stage over the next day or so

They look good.

The flaming I've seen before has resulted in a rainbow effect, not unlike on some Studio Selects.

But this looks pretty good.

The TEI3 is a Generation 1 - possibly made by Bettinardi!

Hope the finishing work goes well.

I am loving this!! so my question is... can i strip the paint from my taylormade daytona ghost? and then can i remove the insert and replace? can you buy a new one? I assume the metal under the paint is OK to do this? its a potential expensive experiment! although i could always repaint it...

I think if you remove the paint from your TM you will find the putter is actually make of cheese and will not like being flamed! :D
