Just been in to Curry's to buy a new fridge as ours was getting a bit old.
Decided to go for a BEKO make, as our last one has lasted over 17 years without a hitch.
Girl in the shop tried to sell us an extended warranty.
"No thanks" I said, "the reason we are getting a BEKO is that our last one lasted so well, over 17 years!"
"Oh, things have changed" she replied..."they only make white goods to last 5 years nowadays"
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Annoys me, if the sales person is pushing a warranty i ask them why? they have spent the last half hour trying to convince me its the best XYZ in the shop and now you are telling me its going to break?! I never take extended warranty on anything. personal choice. its just added margin for the shop IMHO. most people would have lost the receipt or broken the terms within 5 years anyway.

I really hope they are on commission though.
We couldn't get to the store until about 7.30pm as we were busy all day, they closed at 8.
As we walked upstairs there was another salesman talking to the girl that eventually served us. He saw us walk in and quickly ran out to the back of the store, he obviously didn't want to get involved in another "waste of time" customer that late in the day.
The girl did nothing at all to sell us the Fridge, we had already pre-ordered it via the website for collection later. But I would laugh if she at least earned a little bit which would teach the knob salesman to run when he saw a customer coming.

AFAIK, extended warranties do carry commissions; they did back in the days I was a shopfloor sales lackey for a well-known PC supplier. They carry huge markups for the company, and employees are usually targeted to sell so many extended warranties per day/week/month.

Then there's the hoops you have to jump through if you ever need to claim.. with the last extended warranty I had bought (several years ago on a telly) the underwriting company for the warranty had gone bust and swallowed up by someone else. Trying to find out who held the warranty, and getting them to honour it was a nightmare.

Extended warranty on our fridge from curries. Paid for itself many times already. £5 a month and they've been out to repair it 3 times in last 2 years. Next time it goes its a nice new fridge.

My mother in laws 18 month old tv bought from Argos went kaput a couple of weeks back. I rang Argos to say I wanted to make a claim for compensation under the sale of goods act. Argos were superb, the lady told us to get an independent report and return the tv to the branch where we bought it. We did this and got a new tv for around £60.
interestingly they told us this can be done on a tv for up to 6 years, refunds on a sliding scale.
are warantees worth buying?

No, if you put the money aside that you would spend on these warranties you could buy a new item, provided you have not over paid in the first place. The other point is reasonable lifetime, so if your a single person your washing should have 4 x the life of a family of 4s. The point is if some thing breaks after two years of normal general use (we are talking white goods here and tvs etc), then it's rubbish, and the manufacturer should be told and they have a choice, replace, repair or burn in the media storm that will follow...

I generally have a wee bit of sport with the salesperson when it comes to warranties.

They say 5 year warranty so I say that will be until.....six years hence.
They quickly do the maths and say no .......5 years hence.
I then say, ah but you are forgetting the manufacturers statuary one year warranty under the sales of goods act.

Never known one to budge on that so I say no thanks to the 5 year warranty that is only for 4 years.

You little tinker!!
:ooo:

There is always the odd story about someone who saved money with one of these warranties although often they would have had a good case without, but extended warranties are high margin sales for these stores. Just like servicing at car dealers and supersizing at McDonalds where they make their money

Best avoided, IMO.

GO to John Lewis, they price match and usually if you ask them will give you 5 years warranty for free. I get it every time off them.

Currys are a joke, I tried to get discount from them in work. we would have been spending over £90k per year on white goods, and they could even match our current suppliers, they even tried to say they were better as they held more stock. Until I told them I had to wait over 76 days for their next day delivery service that cost £150. DSI are garbage in my opinion, shop around then get john lewis to price match
