Hi

I am a 11 handicapper and hit my irons well with a slight draw. The problem is with my driver. I cant stop hitting a block straight right and its driving me insane. I dont think i have any of the usual problems like bad ball position, hip slide etc. I do sometimes feel as though the grip pressure in my left hand is tighter than my right when i use the big dog, could this be a factor? Please help before my head explodes.

Might be worth trying to loosen the grip a tad. Sounds like its becoming a bit of a mental thing and I'm wondering if you are getting a tad tense and trying to steer it. I find a quick waggle just before starting the swing keeps the tension down and means I can make a flowing swing and release better

It sounds like you are having the exact same problem that I was experiencing. I had a specific driver lesson with my pro and the only thing that he noticed different was that there was not the same commitment to the turn back and through the ball.
The way that he got me to work on this was with two simple drills:
1. The first was very simple in just saying to myself during the swing - Turn back, Turn through.
2. Place a golf ball on the ground about a metre behind your teed up ball. Now make your backswing and as you start your downswing try to get the feeling that you are attempting to hit the ball you have placed behind your target ball. This is only a feeling that you are trying to create which will make you commit to the through swing. You are not actually trying to hit the ball.
This has helped me greatly and I am driving the ball better than ever at tne moment. If I ever feel as though there is a problem creeping back into my drives I simply carry out the above at the range and everything soon falls back into place.

Hope this helps.

It could be that your driver shaft is too stiff. This can result in a shot that is pushed right.

This was my problem until I swapped to a "regular" shaft

Do you drive your legs through too fast? this can lead to your body coming through too quickly leaving your clubhead slightly behind and open. That was my problem.

OK. I've been here (many years ago). To hit your driver straight (or a nice draw) you're going to need to play the roulette of balancing your grip and timing. NOT easy.

Somehow, you are going to need to fix your path or accept what you have.
Basically, if you are swinging in-out, you are only going to hit three shots (push, draw and hook) which is harder to control the less loft you have.
Maybe you should just stand a bit open for a few games and see what comes. OR, go and get a lesson and see what the pro reckons to some drills or fixes.

I was in exactly the same position 18 months ago until a pro recommended I got more upright. I fixed the swing plane in a few weeks, but it's taken over a year to stop slicing.

Thanks everyone for the tips. I played yesterday and today and I think I have solved the problem. I realised I was taking my grip with my shoulders open then squaring my shoulders up for the shot which seemed to leave the face open at impact. So I tried keeping my shoulders perfectly parallel to my target line then taking my grip and hey presto I was hitting them nice and straight and even getting a little draw sometimes. I know it seems small but it worked. Its a funny old game. Thanks again.
