Protecting a handicap

maybe he was just joking around?

Agreed, it would be the kind of thing I would say. I don't have any interest in winning or reducing my handicap really or even shooting the best score I can on any one day.

I just wish to play golf and have fun whilst doing it, whether that is in a social game or a society day or a comp. Sometimes I take on shots I should not and I know it will probably not lead to the best score but hey, I just wish to have fun.

Hope no one ever believes that is protecting the handicap or thinks I am cheating, you could get a complex reading forums over what you say naturally joking :o:mmm:(this and the other thread over taking a lesson, I better just better walk around in silence in future, at least that would please my playing partners :ears:)

I don't get this protecting handicap lark as in general we are actually mostly talking of one points difference.

I have had it many times where a player is .4 of an handicap but says he doesn't want a good round or he would be happy for a bad round and go up.

Me going up from 7 to 8 handicap is hardly going to make a difference and I would also have to play the hole where it was index 8 well also.

Missing a putt or hitting one OOB on purpose is just plain ridiculous but as in most walks of life you will get some that will do anything to win and you will get some that just want to be the best they can be at whatever they do.

Clearly he's joking

Clearly he may not be joking, played in last years club singles KO against a six hcapper. I had the round of my life and was one up on the 17th and missed a four footer to win. He beat me on first play off hole. talking to him in 19th and I asked if he was in tomorrow's comp. He said " no because if I do well and am dropped a shot I have Mr X in the next round and there is no way I am losing a shot coz I cannot stand him".
Unfortunately it happens, some are more open than others. Incidently he won and told me he was right not to play.

At my old club about 10 years ago the winner of the open comp was alleged to have said that they protect their hcp to help them compete in opens (I.e win £150).

My only interest is to improve. In 17 years of club membership I have won 1 medal despite playing in as many as I can.

GUI doing a big promotion for March outlining handicap minipulators as cheats and other members have to be ones who enforce it

Talking with a guy today off 5 , his da off 16 . when they play among themselves for dosh his da can sometimes beat him off scratch , he wont play comps with him anymore as he is embarrased by it

there's guys at my place that have no shame in saying out loud "why play more than 3 comps a year? it just makes it harder to win the big comps"

Seems to be a big problem in Ireland. A lot of these stories I have read recently are from Irish golf clubs.

If you go back and read it he said it rather explicitly to the club pro... I'm not saying it doesn't go on I know it does but in that context I'm confident without even being there he was joking

I commented to a Captain during a match that he was playing much better than his handicap, he told me he Iked to keep it at about that level (17 if i recall) as it makes him competitive and he can win something most years. That has been the only time ive heard, or thought, anyone at my place has done this

All I can say is that I've seen Fragger mess up the last 3 holes plenty of times.......

Mind you he's not often had a good score going by then...😂😂

I hate players like that. You know when they're going to come out and do the deed. You play with them and they don't even seem embarrassed by it. 45 points off a 17 with 4 birdies in there somewhere and no double bogies EVER. I do love it when they are playing well up to the middle of the back nine and they shove a shot into some deep stuff and it's not easy to find. There's a real look of panic and anxiety they overtakes them. If it goes wrong you can guarantee the next holes will be blob, blob, blob, blob with the excuse "I just lost concentration after the 14th blah blah blah'

Folk who know me on here will vouch for the fact that I am fairly straight talking and I have been known to say what I think to players if this I'll. they get uppetty about it when I say my piece to them on a one to one basis but somehow they never took it further and went to a committee member to report me.

Your confidence surprises me, especially as you were not there. I can tell you that the club pro, myself and another member were in no doubt that he was serious. We all have the humour gene and recognise irony when we encounter it.

I think he may well of been not, but it does go on. played with a senior yesterday at Sherwood who plays off an 18 hcap and says he reg shoots 38- 42. But not in comps, don't play in them reg. Was then quite serious when he said " flippin society plays me off 17" I bet he is nearer 15.

Ironically, and this has been hammered to death on here. What's the difference between someone who protects there hcap and cheats. For me nowt.
I posted last year about four family members at our place who's scores were iffy. They nearly always played as a four ball and collected winnings regularly. One of them was seen cheating. Was pulled up about it, and three of them have now left.

im with Tashy on this ,a cheat is someone who tries to manipulate his score ,be it through h/cap protection or the leather wedge.
they all need stringing up by the proverbials.
its going to be interesting for me when Ieventually get back to playing again as i wont be anywhere near my old h/cap and will be asking for a new set of cards to be handed in for a new h/cap.im sure that some will accuse me of banditry and should still be off my original 14 h/cap.we will see as im not fit enough yet to play more than three holes if im lucky,as my leg still gives me a lot of grief

no point in waiting til you start back to be called a bandit. Al get the ball rolling for you on here.

Norinradito is a Bandito. 😂👍

Definitely not, you sound like the second camp.
A mate of mine witnessed one of the guys mentioned in my post score 19pts on the front 9 then deliberately line up left on the 10th tee and hit one straight OOB.
There's the difference. You'd be doing all you could to scrape another 19pts on the back for a little cut. He had no interest in that.

That's shocking.....
