Not a shame at all. I don't miss players that are not there, I concentrate on the players that are there.

Pro golf doesn't have an asterisk for tournaments with non-players. You can only play against the players in front of you.

Great win Hideki!
Yes, I think the variability of golf rounds, even from the most consistent in the world, shows why you really need a high number of the top names in the field to have a good chance of seeing the best contending against the best. That way, you still have a good shoot out between the golfers we want to see, even if Rory is on an off week, and Spieth is shooting himself in the feet. Its just the nature of golf. Tennis for example is very different. Even if just a handful of top names, they will filter through to dice it between them at the end. Golf need depth, and needs top quality depth to be at its best as a spectator sport.
You can only play against the players in front of you - but the weakness in that is that beating a weak field doesnt really amount to anything. Hideki beating Schauffele, Cantlay, Zalatoris, Jayday, is good contest and whoever comes out on top of that has really dont something.

Charlie Woods is going to try to qualify for next week's PGA Tour event..
He plays a pre-qualifier tomorrow and the top 25 advance to the Monday Qualifier which will include Korn Ferry players and lesser PGAT pros.....
Top 4 start the main event
Wow.

Wow.

If you thought Tiger coverage was bad, imagine what it would be like if Charlie qualified.

Special Masters invite anyone?

So..Charlie didn't have a good day...a 12 on a par 4 didn't help
Finished +16......Reality strikes...
Yup, and possibly good for his development.

gotta keep going at it and sticking yourself in these situations. Learning happens on the edge of uncomfortable

Charlie is massively overhyped because of who he is, if he does want to make it as a pro, he has a lot of work to do - but hopefully he can take some positives from today and use them to strengthen.

The media fawning over him though, is absolutely ridiculous.

He is 15 , and clearly has a lot of ability

Plays of plus 3 - he is ability is not being overhyped

Of course the media are going to be all over him - he is the son of the biggest golfer on the planet and is looking to become a professional golfer himself

He has put himself out there and given something a go

One of the ways that Tiger developed was that his dad only allowed him to into competition levels where he had a good chance of winning, this fostered his supreme confidence.

He'd only advance when he was capable enough. Add that confidence to his supreme ability and you have a winner.

I'm surprised he allowed Charlie to get so far out of his depth.

Charlie doesn't appear to have played in many tournaments (none in the AJGA), and has won hardly anything. In contrast, the other 15 year old in the field, Miles Russell, is a multiple winner, and ranked in the top 100 in the World Amateur Rankings. He shot 2 under, still not enough to qualify, but perhaps an indication that experience is as important as ability at that level.

For some making the cut is a huge achievement and these sort of moments are what makes the game so great , it’s not always about the top ten players
I often think that these stories are the best ones in Pro Golf. The events close to the end of the season where players need such and such a finish to retain their card are often the tensest and most absorbing.

Very, very rich people becoming even richer can sometimes be unedifying.
