I've been playing more and more golf over the last 5 months, we started at Woodlands in Bristol, I was shooting 90 - 95, then within a few weeks started to shot mid 80's consistently and finally broke 80 with a 79 at Thornbury Golf Course in Bristol, we then decided to join at The Players, and my rounds were back in the 90's again, so I thought, play a bit more up there and i'll be back at the mid 80's i was hitting but alas no, so I've been up the range on the chipping/putting greens but just don't seem to be able to get those rounds back, or really see much progression, perhaps it's time for some lessons, anyone been in a similar situation who could add some words of wisdom?

Do you know where you're losing your shots?
Long game?
short game?
GIR?
Course management?
Putts?
Maybe it's just a tougher course

Knowing that may help you prioritise your time spent practicing.

All of them, I do think it's a tougher course to be fair, but I could improve all aspects of my game, I mostly hit my Irons well, I would say the 2 parts of my game that suffer the most is driving consistently and putting. My driver has a left to right flight path, not always but most of the time, I've tried strengthening left hand grip checking setup, keeping my head behind the ball, I'm just struggling with consistency.

With putting its distance I struggle with I’m always short, I tell myself hit it a foot past but it never happens that way, or if I do hit it hard enough it goes way past, I think the answer is get some lessons hopefully the answers will come, thanks for your prompt reply!

A problem with putting eh? :p
You say your driving is left to right, how about your irons?
When you take divots, do they point left of your target?

Practise doesnt make perfect, only perfect practise makes perfect. Identify your weakpoints, find a good pro, tell them what you want and do what they tell you,

If you have a fault(s), all practice will do is embed the fault into your game. Get the basics from an expert, then practice. Money spent early in your golfing life will save a lot of grief + you'll save money by not carving balls into the deep do-da

Irons are straight divots point to where I'm aiming, I do get the odd 4/5 iron do a similar flight path but it's mainly my driver, I bought a rescue 3 and I hit that dead straight just my driver that this happens with really, perhaps it's bent!

If everything else is going straight it's unlikely to be your grip or swing path.
It could be a shaft issue or maybe your hitting it too hard and losing your timing.
Try to make the change of direction at the top a bit smoother and dont hit the power too soon.

the players is a much harder course than thornbury in my opinion

have a lesson with one of pros at the players,

i actually travel 50 miles every month to have a lesson with one of the pro's there

Will do Bob, thanks for your help everyone, I'm going to see the pro up my club, I think I'm due a lesson or 2 to get some improvement, I'll report back!

Also, I'm thinking about changing driver anyway, I really like my Taylor Made rescue and wondered if a R9 SuperTri would be a good purchase? I know ideally I should head somewhere and try one, but AmericanGolf only have R11's and don't know where else to try, there not in my proshop or any range I normally go to.

8.5 is a low loft for a driver, try hitting a higher loft with a less stiff shaft than you have now, your pro might have demo clubs you could trial.
