Practice swings without a divot

Is it possible to make a useful practice swing without taking a divot?

Yes definitely.

When I make a practice swing, I'm not actually rehearsing the exact swing I'm going to put on the ball. (That wouldn't be possible even if I wanted to due to the fact that the ball changes everything in the golf swing) I'm more just trying to feel certain moves that I need to make in the swing so that my body can remember to do them without me needing to think about it over the ball.

If I am hitting a half shot/fade/low shot or whatever it just helps with the "feel" of the shot a bit so that I can step up to the ball confident of what I am trying to achieve.

I think the key is that the ball changes your swing no matter what anyway, so trying to practice the exact swing you are trying to do is a pretty pointless exercise. Just look at the difference between Paula Creamer's practice swings and her ACTUAL swing. In her practice swings, her caddy holds a club to her head to make sure she doesn't dip it in the down swing (which is her signature move/fault). She does it perfectly every time. Her head doesnt dip an inch. She then steps up to the ball 5 seconds later to hit her shot and her head dips down about a foot!
