Potential New Home

Well, looking at the official web site I would say this club is really struggling for members as only 40 odd people played the last medal. I also noticed the tee is booked for Saturday competitions between 8 and 10 am. My club the tee is booked all day with no slots until late in the day.

Of course this doesn’t mean to say the course is no good or the club or members, but that’s not many playing a medal and it would make me question one or two things.

In saying that, it sounds good value and just up the road.

What would you question? So I can question it.

I thought you would say that. So, why not many playing medals, why only a couple of single handicap golfers playing medals, is the course open all year, is it winter greens and for how long, what size and age mix is the membership, is the club facilities open all year or could there be winter hours, practice facilities, why is no one needed to countersign a application, why no joining fee, is the club in financial trouble, how is the clubs bank balance, what loans if any do they have, if it’s in trouble and it cant pull in enough new members will a levy be put on existing members, how many green staff do they have, how long has the head green keeper been there, is the pro been there for long, cost of lessons, how early can you play in the morning, if the tee is quiet can you roll up and play, costs at the bar, costs of meals, is there time restrictions for meals, facilities for kids,………..I could go on, but all of this will paint a picture IMO.

Oh, it's a buyers market these days, but you will need to be polite when asking some of the above. I would, I did.

some excellent questions there and stuff I would never really think of. I must admit it really does make me wonder why it is so cheap, hence the phrase in an earlier post saying it sounds too good to be true.

Other questions are the usual ones regarding availability of roll ups (chance to meet people), comps - drawn or booked, full or five day membership, tee booking times / availability, numbers / frquency of societies, members club or business, dress code, etc.

Good questions their, i did not ask about roll ups and for a while thought I had made a mistake in joining as did not know where to find a game when my usual group were unavailable. Thankfully spent some time in the bar, met a few people and am very happy now but if I was not willing to put in the effort I could have been short of a game some weeks.

Whether there is tee booking may also be important. Certainly I know members who have left the club nearest me due to the introduction of tee booking. Basically a few groups of organised seniors have the time to make sure they take all of the prime slots and those outside of the group do not get a look in. Personally I am not organised enough to book a tee time so would rather be a member where I can queue on the first tee.

Having had issues with it myself, I would also ask if there are any events that close the course to members and if there is an arrangement with another club in such circumstances. We have a few regional events and pro-ams at our course which can close it to members for a few days at a time. We also have no arrangement with another club so it is hard cheese if you are looking for a game on certain days.

We also tend to have a number of societies on a Friday which means that the course is effectively closed. We have none at weekends and only members guests can pay and play so generally it is fine but if your golfing day is a Friday then it would be a problem at my club.

I remember the first time I played it (not long after I started playing) I almost died on the tee however. Its down hill to a pond and I wasn't far off. I think now it would be a 3 wood then a 3 wood and a short Iron.

Sounds an interesting hole that one.

There is a hole at Morely Hayes Manor Course (also a Europro course) the 13th, initially downhill. Usualdriver distance is hemmed in by bunkers, so you either have to be straight or very long. Either that or lay up on the first hit. Then its a gentle slog up hill to the green, which if the greenstaff have been in a sadistic mood can mean a hole right on the steepest part of the green, which isn't easy at the best of times

A few months ago I hit a corker of a drive on the 13th at Morley (was a worksleaving do) Managed to outdrive our resident low handicap player (he playes off 6 but tends to go round courses in parr or less these days). Next hit was 5 wood up hill & a PW to get onto the green. The green staff had been at it again & the pin was on the steepest part of the green, meaning my first lag putt nearly made it, but because of the slope I lipped out on the birdie chance, & only just made the now quite long parr putt...

There were one or two other decent holes that day including a nice parr on the 14th too, though for me but my scoring wasn't as good as it should have been mainly due to my putting not being up to its usual standard & those two holes were the last of my decent scoring holes that day. I completely blew up on the 18th, which is a rather nice test in itself.

Morley is best played with 2-4-1's as their season ticket prices as not condusive to encoraging members.

I'd really quite like to play your course now though.

Its not my course yet, But as I say, if you ever want a knock, member or not, give me a shout, same goes for everyone else!

It does mention something on there website about 2 for 1 although its not clear what the deal is.

Just looked up your webbie site at the begining of the thread

& I quote
Normal Greens Fees are:
Weekdays £30 per person per round
Weekends & Bank Holidays £35 per person per round
Prices as a members guest £20 and £25 respectively
2 for 1 day rate - same as members guest

So looks as if anyone going with a 2 for 1 gets on for 20 quid in the week, which is hardly half price, but I suppose not too bad, especially if course is as good as it seems to look.

Yeah but it doesn't say if it is two fore 1 or greenfree or it could even be there own 2 for 1. There is a course not far from me that Realgolferuk played on with me, that do there own 2 for 1. You dont need any vouchers they just charge you both half price.
