Speaking to an old school pal the other day, he mentioned that a course near me were offering memberships for £663 a year with no joining fee. I have played the course before and was very impressed by it. It never crossed my mind to look into membership because I assumed that it would be very expensive.

Looked on the Website and it was there in B£W £663 in VAT and only £10 a year club membership.

Now I played this course only 2 months after taking up golf and it lashed down all day, but I loved it. I thought this would be an ideal club for me, nice club house great layout and a cracking floating island par 3 17th signature hole.

I emailed the club yesterday and today they emailed me back saying if I wanted to join now, it would only be £350 untill 1st april 09. Bargain for 7 months I think.

However, they also told me that I do not need to be recommended by anyone or seconded etc. Why?

It almost seems to good to be true, I dont know any members so i can't do any digging. There are alot of clubs near me so competition is rife, everyone slashing fees so they may be struggling to get people in.

Anyway, they invited me down for a knock and a look around this weekend or next so am going to check it out.

And I forgot to mention its onlt 3 miles from my door step!

Go for it mate, it will save you a shed load of money at that price and give you the experience of being a club member. Quick tip, dont try and go out on ladies morning! They go nuts.

Yeah as I say am gonna check it out, I have been around a few clubs but they havn't ticked all the boxes!

There is a course less than 2 miles from me with a good layout and decent club house, but not many practice facilities and the price wasn't great.

At the moment this one seems to have everything I am looking for!

Go for it Tony, I was offered membership yesterday for £400 until 1st Jan then (old year subs)£865 about £72 a month DD, I didnt question the Club Secretary on this as 4 months members DD is only about £300 for four months, also they have little or now practice facilities.

So I may join in Jan depending if they drop the joining fee & I can get a round in before the end of the year on the course.

The proposed & seconded thing is very outdated but still a good way of vetting potential members. I'm not a fan of this but you'll probably find when you go & play the course with the couple of members you'll be out with, generally you will get the proposer & seconder anyway...

There was one club I'd made enquireies with some time ago that also wanted to interview potential members... My reaction was I only want to play golf not apply for a job, lol... (I hate interviews btw job or otherwise)..

Needless to say although I wanted to join that club & now wished I had, I didn't because of the interview thing.

Yeah, one good thing about joining some clubs part way through the year, especially when there is no joining fee, is that it can be quite cheap initially to give you a decent try out of a prospective club/course. Of course this depends on how the club works their membership..lol

I am desperate to get somewhere on my door step so I can nip there most days even if its jsut to use the facilities after work rather than paying for the range all the time.

For that money, just join and see what is like, if you don't like it then you've had 7 months golf for £350!! Also my outlaws have just moved to Chester and I need somewhere and someone to exercise the sticks with!!!!

when you 'putt' it like that sammebee it seems a no-brainer. Whenever your up this way, your more than welcome to join me, on any track!

Go for it Tony. More & more clubs are having to drop or reduce their entrance fees nowadays so it makes sense to join on an offer like that. Clubs can't be too choosy as to who they will let in because if they are, the money just goes to another club. Thats probably the reason why there are no proposer & seconder requirements nowadays.

Give it a go and see how it works out. For that money it seems reasonable.

(mind you it's still a lot more than I pay up here in teuchter land!)

I shall report back with my finding and hopefully decision.

Shame no one on here has any knowledge of it!

In Tom Cox's book Bring me the head of Sergio Garcia he mentions Mollington as a venue on the Europro Tour so it can't be that bad!!

I think a lot of clubs are still vetting members either by way of proposing or by an interview with the captain/or committee. I know we still do both although it seems that the proposing thing is becoming much less of a requirement. As you say if you play with some members I'm sure they will be happy to put you forward.

At our club if you put someone forward as a proposer and they get in you get £100 added to your bar card which is a pretty decent return in my book

A ridiculously funny book btw. I had to go and read it on the sofa the other night because the missus wanted to sleep and I kept giggling to myself.

Yes the club is very proud of the fact it hosted the europro tour. Its very open at the moment but apparently they have planted 80,000 trees, I would say that, that was the only thing missing from the place, some tree's!

A lot of clubs that have a history of hosting Europro Tour events are all pretty decent. There has only been one course I've no been 100% impressed with & then its only a few hols that let that partic ular one down. Not tried the one in question yet.

Good luck Tony - sounds like a great deal. I'm keen to move but Mr b is entrenched. One local club had great deal on last year but must have got the members they needed because price has now gone back up :(
Of course it's raining so much here don't know if we'll ever golf again :( :(

So much rain, so many posts!

Its actually nice here today and I am stuck n work, I bet the weekend is awful and I dont get a chance to play, Plus side is my range is making a fortune of me.

My driving and 3 wood are coming along great, And I will ned them both for this course, anyone apart from Dave (realgolferuk) spot the 650 par 5, over water!

Doesn't look too bad out the window, but really should be asleep today (on nights).

Just looked at the card... saw a 638 yarder.. you'd need to get 3 nice hits on the short stuff toget there in 3 shots.

Even driver & a 3 wood on a good day, an exceptionally good day is stretching 2 shots...lol

Does look rather nice I must say. Yeah go for it. If Chester wasn't a good 2 hours away (well probably 1 & a 1/2) I'd be looking at that course. Might try it though one day. Price is right up at the normal limit for what I'd normally pay a green fee. Looks like a day away is on the books lol.

I remember the first time I played it (not long after I started playing) I almost died on the tee however. Its down hill to a pond and I wasn't far off. I think now it would be a 3 wood then a 3 wood and a short Iron.
