Hi all,

I've been playing golf on and off most of life at public courses or as a guest, however my local club is very appealing so hoping to join for March. I have a couple of questions if anyone has the time

1. I have been accepted over the phone but have a one on one meeting with the sec. or a director next week, is this usual practice for golf clubs? How formal is it? What do I wear?

2. As this will be my first club, anyone with any tips would be good

Thanks for your time

Be active, talk to people, participate in all a club has to offer... it is not just a place to play golf!

The sec will probably be wearing normal work wear, I suggest wearing what you would wear to an interview, you cannot make too GOOD an impression, only too BAD an impression :D

Where are you thinking of joining. Have you played there yet? I would suggest wearing jacket and tie unless you're told differently. It's normal procedure to have some kind of one on one meeting. Go with a few questions

Are competitions drawn
How easy is it for new members to get a game at weekends/do they hold roll ups (swindles/greedies)
What is the social side like (even if you don't fancy going it shows interest)
Is there a bar levy

very true I guess, yeah they do functions and got sky sports etc, heard food is decent. Plus it's walking distance from the house. Can't wait to be honest:)

Is that where thecraw is a member? If so, run. Run like the wind and never look back. On a more serious note, jacket and tie for definate. Better to overdress than underdress.

Must admit I went for my meet, dressed more or less in golf gear. Polo shirt, slacks and jumper. Guess I should have dressed up a bit. But when I got there the Sec, had all my membership stuff on his desk, ready to go. Could not take my money fast enough. Guess they just knew class when they saw it.

Sorry but i just do not agree with this from golf clubs.

If they need to "see" you then i suspect a bit of selective membership is taking place, in other words if your face doesnt fit etc etc

Sadly this is where i think the golf clubs in the UK are missing the fact that they must become more modern and more like the real world and run the club like a sports business and not some "old school" boys club

Personally i would join a more relaxed golf club unless you feel that this is the only club for you.

I joined ( and left ) a local club like this where there was an interview, i was accepted and i discovered a few weeks later that some were rejected purely based on the fact they didnt fit the normal club membership mould !

My current club took my membership the day i asked for it ( no interview ) and the relaxed social and fun atmosphere of the club is great and makes me enjoy my golf far more unlike the previous stuffy place where they were always complaining about something.

Does 'Modern and more like the real world' mean just take any pikey or chav that turns up? I am glad that my club vets prospective members so that we try to only have people with at least some basic standards of dress and respect for others. I have played at some clubs where pirate gear is normal as is shouting and hollering like a pack of baboons (no disrespect to baboons here) and would not be a member if they paid me.

I had an interview at my club before I joined, but it was more for me to find out about the club. I was told I was meeting Chris, and pleasantly surprised to find it was an attractive lady, who I thought could have given me a more thorough grilling.;) Invited to play 18 holes with her in a roll up, and the rest is history.

I have never known anyone to be turned away from our golf club? We do interviews but it's purly for an exchange of information. if i were you i would write down what you want to ask such as how to enter the comp's,Role ups, help with getting your handicap, pracitce facilates and the social side of the club.

Well i guess the golf snobs would agree with this, and i do also see your point. The club can have its rules, attire, etiquette etc etc, but why feel the need to interview people in jacket and tie ?
We dont play golf in a suit so i agree with the posts saying turn up in the gear you would dress for golf based on the clubs dress code. Granted if you are attending a function / meal etc then i also agree jacket and tie etc would apply.

I think they should suggest that it is an invite to join and not an interview for selection but this is the opinion of a middle aged business man and not a chav / pikey in case you thought i was in favour of low lifes joining

I recently re-applied to join Crowborough Beacon despite being a member there previously, and had to sit in on a "one to one" interview with the new Secretary.
He was very keen to emphasise the new "relaxed" attitude within the club and was very excited about the social aspects of club life.
"You'll love Monday evenings Robert, a few of us get together and get a poker game going. You are more than welcome to join us" he said.
He was a little disappointed when I replied that I wasn't very keen on gambling and I would decline the offer.
"Oh well, never mind" he said. "Tuesday nights are good, a few more of us meet in the bar and have a right old drinking session, often carrying on until the wee small hours. It's great fun. Again, you are more than welcome to join us, integrate, that sort of thing"
"I'm sorry Graham, I'm not a big drinker" I replied. "I'll give that one a miss too".
I could see he was a little disappointed.
"You're not Gay are you?" he asked.
"No of course I'm not" I replied, getting a little annoyed by his suggestion.
"Damn. You won't enjoy Wednesday nights either then".

few good points, the class thing has always stopped me from joining a club before. to be honest the club seems ideal for me but guess that's why the meeting is in place. feel a bit more confident now. also there is 2 of us joining so i'll always have a buddy to play with if my face don't fit haha

You would fit in great here......golf clubs need to adapt quickly or many will disappear IMO.

Summed up well here...... http://www.golfclubmanagement.net/2012/02/manager-warns-of-death-of-non-flexible-clubs/

yeah when i called round a few clubs to join i got the impression they were desperate for members, i don't think many young folk are taking it up

I had my interview last week with the captain and vice captain of the club. Was a very pleasant, informative meeting, especially as I am relatively new to the game, and they made me feel very welcome. Dress code was smart casual in the clubhouse, so trousers and a shirt.
