I had the great pleasure of playing a quick nine holes yesterday with my son in law at Portobello G.C.
What a terrific starter course it is. OK, it's not Gullane or anything like any of those fabulous courses of East Lothian, BUT, you still have to hit the ball, there are decent bunkers, acceptable greens, given the time of year, and it proved to be a very enjoyable par 32 nine holes.
BUT, word has it from the locals that the Council are looking to close Portobello at the end of next year. What a shame that would be. It was opened in 1852, according to the Honours Board.
As far as I'm concerned, if I was starting out my golf career, I wouldn't be off the course. It's the PERFECT course to hone your skills before you venture further afield.
So if anyone out there has any influence, please do what you can to keep the course open, for the sake of the next generation.
It would be a crying shame if Portobello was lost.
