Portmarnock Open??

Well if your so open to going against the 160+ year tradition of the open being held in Britain/uk then why does it need to adhere to any ‘rule’ that it should be played on a links style course?
Whilst it's true that The Open has to date only been held on UK courses, that has largely been due to wishing to keep The Open on Links courses and there being very few such courses being able to host it outside of the UK.

Well they certainly don’t apply that strict philosophy to the women’s and senior opens.

I guess they aren’t as important or more flexible with the R&A’s long held traditions about links golf and equality.
Meaning the precedent has been set to change for the Open to non links too?

And If they can bend on that then they can bend on what nation it can take place in surely.

There is no precedent to change to non linkk , even if they do go to Portmarnock it’s still on a links course

I don't see how the seniors and womens opens have a bearing on the debate about The Open and yes of course the R&A can do what they like we don't have a say and I'm not asking for one. I thought though we were having a debate on what we see as the right thing to do. Anyway we are not going to agree on that so I am out.

Edit: The first womens open (1976) was not held on a links course and was not organised by the R&A and the Seniors open is not yet 40 years old and is not under the sole ownership of the R&A.

I'm Irish and I wouldn't be in favour of The Open being played in portmarnock. I was kinda ok with it at Portrush as that's part of the UK but having it in the republic of Ireland doesn't feel right for whatever reason.
