Police going OTT!

The only thing I get from this thread is - MIB is rather careless with his property!

We've all done it sometime! :D

I've done it before, but when there was nobody behind, just went back & got it. The only time I ever put it down is on the tee of a par three. Through the green it's just out the bag, measure & straight back again. In the 55 years I've been playing I've left clubs & other things on the course & this is the first time I haven't got something back. A mate of mine left a wallet with 800 Euros in it on a course in Spain & got it back.

You definitely should think seriously about the offer of counselling! :D

im surprised your insurers offered to pay up as you were negligent ..

if someone had taken it out of your bag or car or something id class it as stolen .. the person who has it now "found it " rather than "stole it" did they not.. ??

Taking something that doesn't belong to you is stealing, full stop. Doesn't matter how you came by it. And if insureres didn't pay out to people who were negligent there would be lots of claims turned down, like anyone who runs his car into the back of another.

He may have "found" it but he knows it isn't his and it should have been handed in, if he didn't then Yes he has stolen it!

Wasnt having a go , apologies if it seemed that way , its just i deal with insurers & insurance companies regularly
first things checked in an auto accident over here are tyres & brakes , if they are not up to standard the insurers wiil be reluctant to pay as you contributed by negligence ...
I know of at least case where a a person left their keys in their car and the car was stolen & insurers didnt pay up

Unfortunately there are so called golfers who are not as honest as we would expect and feel they have the right to bag a head cover, glove, towel or even a rangefinder knowing full well it's not there's and should be handed in to the pro shop. We've all dropped items or left them behind, some more valuable than others but in effect it is still theft if someone following on picks it up and does not hand in. I guess the police response is a bit OTT but they are only following procedure as you have reported.

I'm not sure I agree your description that it was stolen. Though I am shocked such an expensive item was not handed in. Applying your logic then we are all guilty of stealing almost every round when we find golf balls on the course. Over the years I must have found and used hundreds of pounds worth of balls yet don't consider myself a thief. However, I'm pleased your insurance company has agreed to pay out.

MIB important lesson for you, never ever come on here looking for sympathy when something goes wrong. This isn't that kind of forum mate you will always but always find someone who enjoys putting the boot in. I once had a golf club go missing with Hermes, came on here to tell people. 5 posts in it was all my fault. You find them all on here pal.

Just thinking this through if you didn't have insurance would you still have reported it to the police ?

I lost a wedge in NZ by leaving it around the 17th green when I went off to help some visitors find a lost mobile and forgot all about it till checking my bag on the first the next time i played, after enquiring that it hadn't been handed in never crossed my mind to report it as stolen . ( No insurance )

Is there any chance that the person that picked it up has put it in the pocket of his bag and forgotten about it after the round? Similar to picking up a club that's been left by a green and putting it in your bag. At the end of the round you go through your normal routine and put your clubs in the car boot and then when you get home stick them in the garage until you play again. It's only then you remember that you've got the found club in your bag and hand it in. Maybe whoever has it has stuck it in a pocket and won't remember about it until the next time he goes into that pocket for something. Or is that just me trying to see the good in people rather than assume it's been nicked?

I have to say I find this quite disappointing that no one handed this in to the shop, I would never pick up and keep a pitch mark tool without handing it in.

I have to say though I think you lost this not had it stolen from you and think your lucky your insures are paying out. I have heard cases of people defrosting their car with the engine running popping into the house to get something, when they returned the car was gone the insurers stated negligence and did not pay. To me their car was stolen

Sad as it may be if I left my phone or wallet in a bar and left for an hour I would think I was very lucky if I got it back but i'm not sure I could of considered it being stolen from me, if it was taken from my coat pocked to me that would be stealing.

If you read my original post I would never have considered reporting to the police if the insurer hadn't asked for a crime number, I'm embarrassed about the trouble it has caused. If it hadn't been insured I'd have put it down to experience but still have been disgusted that someone took it.

Unlikely. The two folks behind us left the course almost immediately after playing the hole where it was left. Don't think they could have failed to notice it. Anyway, the post was just to highlight the dramatic reaction of the police to a simple request for a crime number, not to winge about the loss, which was down to my carelessness.
