Polar Winter on its way...

lol, nice pun.

Wednesday jsut gone it was supposed to snow heavy, I watched as the clouds came over and saw, nothing. That said I do believe, and this has nothing to do with the Express, that we will have a really cold winter, we won't necessarily have much snow, but it will be bitterly cold with temps down below freezing for long periods.

WTF do people want, a Mediterranean winter? Its Britain, we're several hundred miles above the equator. IT GETS COLD.

Its a non story.

Although if anyone has any videos of women driving BMW's in the snow/ice, those need to be shared because they are hilarious!

Sky news website is the most accurate ive used for the weather , they give a 5 day and you can choose your own area type thingy .. i find its the nearest at being right ,,

It culd be worse tho ... you could have an Irish forecast

Today will start cold (eh its november in ireland ) , temps will rise slightly during the day with a a chance of sunshine , scattered showers , low to moderate wind which may become strong in isolated areas ( you guess which areas , if its not windy at your house , guess what ?) we could have snow in high areas (where on top of a mountain in Wicklow) night time could see foggy patches but clearing to frost in areas with low to zero cloud cover (wow!!) ...

all we need is a heatwave for 10 mins around 2pm and we have a full house

Always amazes me how unreliable the forecasts are. I can check the met office for Royal Lytham which is a two minute walk away from us and it's not unheard of for it to be showing the exact opposite of what the weather actually is.

Solar activity: Sun Spots and earth directed CME's (Coronal Mass Ejections) and the Siberian snow accumulation.

Solar Activity, the high level winds and weather flows west to east around the equator, this is warm air, during spells of high solar activity where sun spots are prevelant, like now as the sun approaches it solar maximum and earth direct CME's can alter the flow of weather around the equator to the north and south, when this happens we get mild, wet winters, we've not had any major CMEs that have been pointed directly at the earth, so therefore the warmer weather stays around the equator.

Siberian Snow Fall, although this is not direclty related to the UK weather patterns, snow in Siberian started to accumulate mid to tlate September and quite quickly spread west and stayed, for this to happen there has to be northern blocking in place. Northern blocking for the UK combined with the jet stream being south of the UK means the cold artic air can move further south than it usually would, this may bring snow with it, it may not, but what it would mean is that the UK would sit in artic and siberian air flow and it would be very cold.

You may well be right as if the long range forecasts turn out to be true then this is what is likely to happen. Having said that the long range forecast is now backtracking a bit on the cold weather.

Well, he did ask!

The jetstream is the main factor determining our weather. As its amplified just now its cold, brrrrrrr. 16 day Forecast is it looks to be flattening soon and staying north so expect temps to go up to 11 or 12 ish beginning of December:thup:

If it's that obvious how come the forecasters get it wrong more often than not?
Have they never heard of Coronal Mass Ejections?

as previously stated they can only predict 5 days in advance with any degree of certainty

It mostly depends on the weather patterns coming up. In some conditions such as blocking high pressure they can get 10 days reasonably correct. But if you have a load of fronts and low pressure then anything over 2 days is generally a lottery.

Plus people judge the accuracy differently. If you are looking for them to tell you if it will be raining at a specific times in anything over 2 days time, then most of the time forget it. If you are looking for them to tell you the general conditions and rough temperature in 10 days time then they are not too bad.

Go stand on top of Cairngorm any winter and you'll have an Arctic one - why the Cairngorms can be so deadly in winter - we don't realise we've got the 'Arctic' on our doorstep.

well its been a baltic 10 degrees average recently, 11* forecast for tomorrow, better double lag the pipes and stock up at the supermarket:rolleyes:

aye - it was foggy this morning - maybe I couldn't spot the Arctic weather when I went to the shop this morning jacket or jumper free.
