Never played a round where you get points instead of a score as normal. Can anyone tell me how it works as I'm confused when reading some of the posts. i'm quite new to the game so it's not obvious to me.
appologies in advance for being a newbie ;)

I think you are referring to the Stableford scoring system.
It's pretty simple you get points for your net (after any shots allowed) score.

2 or more over par 0 points
1 over par 1 points
par 2 points
1 under par 3 points
2 under par 4 points
3 under par 5 points
and so on..

Is this what you were thinking of?

Yes,but dont understand how that works :D
If I was an 18 handicap for example would I get a shot every hole? Par 4 and took 4 would that mean 3 points?

Yes Alec, if you were off 20 then you'd get two shots at the hardest two holes, and so on.

Off twelve i get a shot at the hardest 12 holes.

If you were an 18 h/c then you would get one shot per hole and a 4 on a par 4 would give you a nett 3 and 3 points.

I am a 5 h/c and therefore I would only receive a stroke on those holes that are Stroke Index (SI) 1-5. A 24 h/c would receive 2 strokes on SI 1-6 and a shot on the other 12.

Therefore playing to your h/c would give you 36 pts (18 holes x 2 points average per hole)

aha, cheers for that guys. My mate wants to play this way every other week and he plays off 24 but I dont have a handicap as never played in a medal.looks good to me ;)
ps - i often get a par and the odd birdie but ruin the card with 7's so would benefit me maybe.

It benefits everyone really, when you can no longer score you just pick up and score 0. Instead of ruining your card you just go onto the next hole and try again. The terminology you may hear goes something like "4 for 3 for 3" that means I scored 4 but I get a shot which makes 3 which gives me 3 points for a net birdie. Or 5 for 4 for 2, again I scored a 5 I get a shot that makes a 4 which on a par 4 gives 2 points.
It is easy once you play a few times.
