Saturday was the captains prize, I played with 3 others playing of 5,8 & 18 and my 20. First fella hit off and was massive off the tee, next fella was the same then the 2 hackers where some 80 yards behind.

Along the way to the 18th I was chatting to the 5 'capper - he has being playing golf for a total of 15months and holds a handicap of 5.

In short his swing is 'homemade' but its long and straight - he missed lots of greens but his short game was out of the world - he could hit a wedge from 3 yards from the green which would hop, spin and stop. Never once was he more than 2' from the pin.

It was great to watch around the green, I asked him if he gets out much and his reply was 'yea almost every day' I replied 'thats great, don't you work' of which the reply came 'well sorta - I am a footballer' (did play in premiership jrn teams but now home and playing Irish league)

So thats it - in my eyes you either have it or you don't - and I don't

Tho I thought it was a super achievement - 5 handicap in a year!!

They aways say that it's your short game that's most important but in my early playing days I always worked on the basis of, if it takes me 8 to get to the green it doesn't really matter if I can chip or putt - so I worked equally on everything and that seems the best way. Now I concentrate on whatever I think is the weakest part of my game at the present.

My putting is toilet, and its getting worse. Sunday i played driver/wedge into our 2nd par 4 SI is around 5 leaving myself a 25ft straight put from the back,

I read the put as 20ft slow as green is wooley dead straight with about a foot left to right brake in the last 5 foot which is slightly downhill and the grass is a bit shorter there. - result - got the the top of the slope (approx 20ft) going like the clappers, the slope looked alot slower than it was and with a 4 ball the words "still me" run for my next three putts. Bugger

the reminds me, its been ages since i done a wedge session and ive noticed my 50yards in shots are slipping. Must get out for another wedge session in the next week or too.

Great achievement - although saying he sorta works is a bit of an overstatement - he probably trains twice a week and plays on a Saturday in the Irish League Which club does he play for?

Now just to save my depression with this wonder person - what is the average handicap of a golfer?

I would think it must be quite high when I look at some club returns and they are the ones who think they have a chance of winning on the day.

Maybe nearer Cat 3 than Cat 1, in my opinion.

Think theres a young chap at the club up the road who has been playing 2 years and hes at +2 now

Even if he is a full time pro he'd have afternoons to play and practice and go to the range in the winter. If he plays most days and practices then his game is bound to be sharp and even with a homemade swing it wouldn't take much to get a few short game lessons. It is the key though and fortunately my putter is saving me at the moment and the short game is patchy

Pish! I've been playing one year, have custom fit clubs, have taken lessons, read loads of books, had a reasonable amount of practice and doubt I'll be able to play to my inevitable 28 handicap and couldn't hit a barn door with a banjo! Now that Ken, THAT is impressive!
