Play more golf

I have one currently for Worsley GC in Manchester. I knew I was moving out the area in 6 months time so didn't want to commit to a full membership so for what I needed it for it was brilliant, got me through a summer of golf (playing 3 or 4 times a week).

Pros:
- Most of the full benefits of members, could get a handicap and enter most comps but couldn't enter board competitions.
- when a lot of clubs were shutting off visitors or visitors were struggling to get tee times it was a godsend.
- having the flexi points to use elsewhere is handy when visiting relatives or away.
- referring somebody gets you both another 15 points ?
- a bit naughty but if I was heading out for a post work round knowing I would only be able to play 6 holes or so I wouldn't use any points. You could get on the course and no one would really bat an eyelid as you had the membership token for the bag.

Cons:
- it varies club to club but I could only book tee times 7 days in advance, when the main members got 10 days. This made getting prime tee times quite difficult.
- on the app you can't actually see which tee times are completely free, only those that have a slot available. So you could end up with a random. I basically had to check the tee sheet on the club website and then book through the app.
- a few clubs are knocking it on the head now because of their membership numbers swelling so much this year that its not worth keeping the PMG members. Worsley certainly are. Something to bear in mind.
- occasionally it actually worked out cheaper to go on as a member of a guest. I took a friend on a Sunday morning which cost me 7 points (about 21 quid) but only cost him 15 quid as a guest of a member. So if you are playing a Sunday morning with another member it is probably best saving your points and paying as a guest.

My 2 cents anyway.

I'm a PMG member at Scarcroft in Leeds, and these are my thoughts. Please note these are only my experience and is restricted solely to Scarcroft GC:

Difficult to get a decent tee time, as we can only book 5 days in advance, and full members get 7. This means it's almost impossible at this time of year to play 18 holes, as all the morning slots are taken by the time we can book
If a full member books a tee time on BRS, the entire slot is removed from PMG, so you can't add yourself to make up a 2, 3 or 4 ball
Unable to play in almost all comps, only the standard monthly medal/stableford

But the worst thing by far is being looked down upon by the rest of the memebrship, and being considered cheap, and "not the sort of person" who should be at the club, because I can't paly during the week and so won't pay £1400 per year on principle for the priviledge of being to play at weekends

Needdless to say, even if they had not cancelled their contract with PMG, I would not be renewing

Thanks for the feedback.

Bit the bullet and joined St Ives (Hunts).
Looking into it there, getting slots at the times I would play shouldn't be a problem. I can play in all midweek comps, but none of the weekend or major comps. Which I'm not bothered about anyway. Get access to all the practice facilities like a full member and my lad can join as a normal junior member.

With a voucher code and a referral code I've got 105 home points + the 20 away points. Which should be more than enough for me. If I find I need more then I'll probably look at full membership the following year anyway.

Well..... that really is quite shocking but I am not at all surprised. Sadly it would also apply at many other N Leeds Clubs I'm very familiar with. Little wonder they struggle to retain members.:confused:

Unfortunately the weekends are the prime time for every golf club so if PMG is a cheaper membership then it’s only going to be right that access to the tee times will be prioritised to the members who make more of a financial commitment to the club

Different membership categories with different payment structures are going to be given different level of rights

I had a pmg for a while and really enjoyed it (especially when the lad behind the counter didn’t take the requisite points for the round! gotta love a free game or 10 ?)

You’ve gotta be careful with your points. I reckon I only played in about 3 weekend comps a season, they where at least a third dearer than the midweeks.

To me, pmg is great as a taster, a midweek only, or a seasonal player. If you’re mainly an every weekend kind of guy, then I don’t think it’s viable.

Know a lot of places that do these credit schemes. I think they work well if you can get out midweek when the number of credits necessary is smaller but for someone that works during the week and only has access to weekend golf I don't think they necessarily represent value for money. I guess it depends what you want from a membership scheme but access to competitive golf at weekends will come at a price. No different to an ordinary membership in that respect

I've done the math and this should work for me. It's almost a third of the cost of full membership, something I definitely wouldn't get full value from. My points should get the equivalent of 23/24 rounds of golf. Which will work out less than half the price of pay to play.
It also give me access to all the practice facilities and will allow me to get my son junior membership for £50. I'm currently paying between £12 and £34 per week for us to play pitch and putt or the local short 9 hole course. So financially it's much better and gets him out on a proper course and hopefully involved with their junior setup.

I've joined with a friend and it works for us. Neither of us are bothered about weekend comps. Like I said before. I've been there, done that and it just doesn't interest me anymore. We can play all the midweek ones if we feel like it.

I'm mildly interested in what sort of handicap I can get. But mainly I've now got to make sure I get my monies worth out of it.

?

I get that and as you say if you can do the maths and the costs stack up for you then it makes sense. Add in the practice facilities as well and it seems a no brainer before you add in junior's membership as well. Go for it and enjoy. I guess the biggest plus is the ability to top up if you need to

It's a gateway back in to club golf too after 13 years out. It will be nice to have somewhere regular to play and practice that is very close to home.

If the boy takes a more serious interest and I can continue working from home I should be able to play more. Then I will consider the full membership.

If interested in doing something for your H/cap you'll be able to put in General Play Acceptable Scores with your mate....... I don't think it's right for members to be 'scorning' such memberships if they are providing & encouraging folk to perhaps join fully in the future. The cost of Premium-points for weekend play should be enough to discourage regular use.

How do you actually quantify "being looked down on"???
Playing with other members in comps who have voiced their opinions without knowing I was a PMG member.

I streess this isn't a club attitude, but rather the attitude of a large section of the memebrship. They feel that allowing members at this price, no matter what playing restrictions were imposed on them, is diluting the standards of the club

Yeah, not the Club as they're trying all they can to keep going. I can support Michael here, as have heard the same from some of their Members. Has to be a big change in attitudes so that Clubs can, in the future, go forwards by offering a greater variety of Memberships. I understand that this model works on the continent.

Sad that there are still real golf snobs out there who fail to realise that members in whatever form they pay their membership are vital for the continuation of the club itself.
