Pitch marks.....

...but you cannot protect the course from numpties - one such last week missed a putt on our 17th - took an irritated swipe at the ball to knock it away and took a 6" divot out of the green - grrr!!!!
 
I have a tendency with a very high ball flight to bury my ball in the greens when they get soft, so i am pretty diligent with pitchmarks, it can get frustrating having to repair half a dozen of the things on some holes but I will usually sort out any that I spot.
 
How bad is this issue really on a normal day?

I play half a dozen courses regularly and if I were to see 2 pitch-marks on any given green on any course then it would be a lot
(although I would add I can usually find a couple of poorly repaired pitch/marks on any green, by that I mean scorched)

None are members courses, most are played by either tourists, societies or nomadic golfers so not really the profile of golfer famed for repairing pitch-marks

I'll concede that while I don't know for sure, I'll assume each green is visited everyday before play by greenstaff so doubtless they take care of any they see but I'm not seeing the problem that some of you are faced with

Accepted... as i have done on occasion , its just to make people think of it ,
if i was a starter and i asked "guys do ye have pitch repair markers with ye please "
& you reply'd "no i do it with my tee"
id say "no bother fair play"

but it might start to register with those that dont . then there is the ones that you could walk around with and tell them every hole and in the long run it wouldnt make the slightest bit of difference , was sick repairing pitch marks Sun morning

Exactly. They'll often walk to where their ball is, not where it initially pitched

The course wasn't overly full but their was a slight delay on the 18th.

Initially caused by a slow 4 ball, then a lost ball and subsequent search from the following group, left me in the fairway 180(...ish) from the green with the group behind waiting to tee off. I'm not sure why they didn't tee off as I was well out of range but hey-ho.

Re: The chap asking why I was repairing pitch marks that weren't mine.

I explained that it's in the best interests off all members to keep the greens in good order.

I was playing last Tuesday and after playing my shot I walked toward the hole and my pp said dont forget your clubs but i was just picking up the divot to replace it to which he remarked " why bother it wont grow back " when we got to the green his ball was 7ft away from the hole but with a pitch mark between his ball and the hole and he had the cheek to moan.:confused:
 
Has the proliferation of trolleys led to an increase in pitch marks? I've just left a Club where most golfers seem to use them and it has a serious PM problem. The members were very good at leaving their trolleys between green and next tee but this has led to an unintended consequence - very few of them bother to walk to the front of the green to repair their PMs; hence the front third of each green is like a moonscape. Has anyone else noted this problem at their Club?
 
Not repairing pitch marks is just one manifestation of the fact that many golfers are just inconsiderate and selfish idiots. Our greenkeepers are repairing an area of ground maybe 5mx5m that is immediately adjacent to a tee (and hence why worn and needing repaired). The area is on the direct line between the previous green and the tee. Area all well dug over and neatly raked and prepared. But no fence. Of course this allows any idiot to drag or drive their trolleys over it rather than skirt it - involving no extra walking - and so quite a few did. Greenkeepers have had to redo it and put a little fence around it. Give me strength!
 
Massive MASSIVE MASSIVE pet hate of mine! I repair all my pitch marks as long as I can find them, amd will spend a god few seconds/minute or so loking for mine whilst waiting to putt. I'll also repair any others i see, but i certainly don't make any bones about lettig someone know they missed the pitch mark too.

Weybrook Park where I play is renound for being one of the best courses and greens during the winter in Hampshire.....never being on temp greens or tees, yet people abuse this and constantly don't repair their pitch marks which in the winter are 100 times worse. When we're on temp greens due to greens having to be repaired or rested due to amount of pitch marks and rest time needed its the other members that suffer.

Really think something needs doing at a local level and clubs need push people to be more consciencess.
 
Very annoying we are at a hotel course and sadly suffer from lots of un-repaired pitch marks, this is by no means just a guest thing in any comp we play in there are un-repaired pitch marks and un-raked bunkers and this can only be members.

A friend of mine played at a club that had signs by greens stating how many pitch marks a day each green gets and time they take to recover. If this helps or not I have no idea but it does sound a good idea

I had had never played more than 9 holes at Weybrook until the Pro-Am earlier this year and was really impressed. I could be biased because we won but it was in great shape and in Martin you have not only a good bloke running it but someone who knows about keeping a course well.
