There was a wee sign up on the first tee the other day. The courses around here are totally washed out. It's rained everyday here for weeks now. One course had to cancel all their comps the other day because of water logged fairways. It's the big joke called the Scottish Summer lol

I'm losing a yard on drives because the ball is plugging and bouncing back haha

here on the east coast of scotland it's been great :smirk: occasional spell of heavy rain, but dry warm and sunny just about every day. for some reason the met office has been underestimating the temperature in edinburgh regularly of late by 4-5 degrees...lovely.

It's been very decent weather on the Tayside Riviera of late - odd heavy shower but generally nice - add in that I play links courses and there's no chance of balls plugging and bouncing back.

Having said that I'm teeing off at 6pm tonight and it's forecast to rain at 9 :angry:

Sounds good folks. Glad it's going well for some. It's been throwing it down all day today. Mental. My course drains off pretty well considering but others have been flooded.

Bowling green is where I've had balls nicked. Possibly Rannoch on reflection as I usually knock it over the corner and it goes out of sight, I've had good shots end up nowhere to be found, could have been nicked I suppose.

Lake between 9 and 10 ends up dry all summer, it still has water in the depths of winter. However club is currently applying for permission to landfill, which will fill in the lake amongst other areas, but would provide lots of funding for improvements.

It's off topic - but this is a pity as it was a great new feature when it was dug and filled with water. Besides - when the rules on Sports Club VAT were revised and we members all got a refund we voted at an EGM for the monies to go to course improvements and these were largely digging the lake on 9th/10th and the deep pond on the Par 3 2nd hole (now no more). Can I have my money back

Personally I hate the lake, purely due to the number of tee shots on 10 I have hit into it.

Painswick near Cheltenham is a nightmare for walkers. Walking along pathways to the sides of fairways, and not stopping for golfers to tee off, you end up having to just play and shout if your ball is heading towards them.

this is where the group were picnicking on the green. and also I heard holes in one are not readily accepting on hole 5 as there were so many being recorded with the blind green

Because that's too easy. If I was playing in a comp or something else, I'd have to play the shot so I played it.

I see folk are missing the point anyway. The fact is, that, it's not a public park for folk to just walk all over the place. It woudl be a different story if one of the kids was hit by a ball.

Hehe yea that part is true. And horses too don't forget them, they'll hold you up too!

Kids and au pairs are fine I used to be a member of a course where you did not play one end in the evening or unaccompanied and the local citizens were known to take pot shots with air rifles at the occasional golfer.
A fair bit better now I believe though the last time I played we were offered a swig of Buckfast by a passing worthy on one tee.

Never heard of preferred lies in July before. You must be having it rough up there.

Having said that, about four years ago we had really bad overnight storms on the morning of Captains Day which is always the first week in July. There was a river running right through the middle of our second green and if it wasn't for a group of volunteers who turned up at 6am to squeegy the greens then the comp would have been cancelled.

Kids on the course?

I played today and was standing on a tee when you could hear a loud bossy voice coming from behind. Over the way, on the side of a close fairway was a teacher with about 15 kiddies about 7 years of age, they were standing very close to where balls were thudding in on second shots on a par 5. I saw at least 2 balls land within 15 to 20 yards of them and the teacher got then to applaud the shots? I just couldn't help wondering how Mrs Smith would feel receiving the "your little Jonny has been taken to hospital having been hit on the head with a golf ball today" utter stupidity, eventually they just turned back to where they had come from

Perhaps just as well. Given the number of dogs and horses on the common, it wouldn't be sand they were full with....

Best hole is the 5th from the Scottish side (Queensmere?). 240yd par 3 with woods either side and a path crossing half way down. Dog walkers and joggers keep popping out from either side like ducks on a fairground shooting range. Teeing off is enormous fun.

Played at the New Forest GC when some couple with their dog wanders across the course. They've got the whole New Forest to walk their dog in and they choose the small patch of land covered by the golf course. Naturally i waited until they were well out of the way so as not to be in my eye line etc.

Happens all the time. Most of them are pretty good to be fair, they stay out the way as much as possible and stop for a chat, but there are a few who walk their dogs there 'because they can'. As its on common land they have right of way on the the course and they know it. Not a lot you can do about them other than snarl at them and wait
