Yesterday I head out on my first round as a member and not a visitor. I'm 9 over heading to the 12th hole up a long path to the top of the course and I pass by a family of 3 kids and 4 dogs on my way to the tee. I get up to the tee, assess my shot.

Last time I played the hole I stuck a 5 iron on the green on the par 3. The wind was in my face so I pulled out the 4 iron ( I don't have a 5 wood) and proceeded through my pre shot routine. I hear voices. It's the family with their noisy kids all wandering around the tee box with their dogs.

"Daddy I don't want to walk anymore!!"
"Shhh the guys going to take his shot"

I line up, give a wee waggle, get to the top of my back swing...

"AAAAAHHHHHH Daddy get that bee AWAY !!!!"

SWOOOOSH I send a 45 yard daisy cutter along the grass.

*Sniggers from the dad"

I was so angry I speared my club back into my bag like a Spartan warrior and proceeded to walk a hole number of steps to my ball. I pulled out an 8 iron in fury and didn't even line it up. I belted it and it landed left of the greenwith a difficult chip across a hollow in the ground. Double bogey for me but their walk wasn't disturbed as they gently walked across about 5 fairways as they headed down the hill again.

I was so angry for about 3 holes. Luckily there's a nice walk down the hill to the 16th so I calmed down by then. Nearly ruined my round. I still shot 84 right enough, but it could have been better.

Anyone else get randoms walking about the course with kids and dogs?

Played at the New Forest GC when some couple with their dog wanders across the course. They've got the whole New Forest to walk their dog in and they choose the small patch of land covered by the golf course. Naturally i waited until they were well out of the way so as not to be in my eye line etc.

Previous club had multiple public footpaths across it - nightmare (walkers and ball nickers) - and had folk swimming and using inflatables in the lakes. Nuttiest situation I saw was a big family having a picnic in the rough between 1st and 17th fairways not 100yds from 1st tee. They didn't give a monkeys about the risk to themselves, about the club or the members.

Haha 3 holes to get over this.

Never knew playing on your own was so serious:D

^^^Quite - at my previous club - as mentioned above - if I had held irritations and resentments against public distractions then I'd be angry all of the way round. You just had to get used to it - and to be polite to miscreants when pointing out the error of their ways. Getting angry was a waste of time and a sure way to ruin my golf.

I actually take my golf quite seriously. I don't give myself gimmies. I hole out on every hole. I don't piss about because if I did, I'd look like a prize tool if I'd been cheating myself then played along with folk. It took me three holes to calm down because it started raining really heavy for about 4 holes and I was just pee'd off generally because things changed quite quickly.

Is there something wrong with playing golf on your own?

If you're playing on your own and something like this happened, why not just retake the shot?

Because that's too easy. If I was playing in a comp or something else, I'd have to play the shot so I played it.

I see folk are missing the point anyway. The fact is, that, it's not a public park for folk to just walk all over the place. It woudl be a different story if one of the kids was hit by a ball.

Playing on my own one evening I had just hit my tee shot at the par 3 17th. Ball was still in the air when a young girl, 4 or 5 at a guess, ran out of the trees and across the front of the green. Nothing I could do and fortunately my ball missed her. Moments later another kid and two adults followed her.

They took off sharpish before I got down there but I was furious. It's one thing wandering around a golf course but if you're oblivious to the people playing golf you're taking a huge risk. I can understand (although not condone) kids coming onto golf courses and roaming around but not parents who aren't looking after them.

The best I heard at a previous club was a family set up Camp to have picnic and a day on the common with the kids by pitching up ON the 16th green lovely spot but maybe a touch hazardous...

Is it public ground or private property?

I let mine run around the course like feral cats, they are free to roam the course and are only allowed back in the car when they have retrieved half a dozen premium balls. Stealing from greens before players approach, whilst frowned upon, is not discouraged.

My 6yr lad now hides in a ghillie suit near to the 3rd green, which after the tee shot, has a blind path to the green, so he has approx 12 seconds to snaffle the balls.

Maybe they'll progress onto stealing clubs from the back of unlocked and un closed 4x4 in the near future :D

A few people come on here moaning about things and fail to give out all the information in the OP.

You made it out the people peed you off and have now added the rain aspect, that is a minor detail but an important one.
Im all for taking golf seriously when it matters and I admire your dedication for taking that into a singles game on your own,but imo that's ott.

I suppose it will help though getting you used to playing in front of a audience.

Don't get into the blame game though it will only effect your golf more.

Unlocked? My kids bedtime reading are electrical diagrams of range rover alarm systems and for xmas they are all getting a personalised lock picking kit and screwdriver.

Unusual to find people walking about a private course as they are potentially trespassing? Would bring it to the commitee attention.

Don't know about the situation down south but up here they have "the right to roam". Doesn't mean the right to run riot and do what they like but certainly to come onto the course.
