I've got a £25 voucher for my shop and am looking for some premium balls to buy to use in comps. My choice is obviously between the pro v1x and the penta. I know that the pro v1x performs very well as I've found a few before, but what does everyone think of the penta? Is it worth choosing it over the pro v1x?

Why 'obviously'?

Both are good but I changed to Bridgestone B330 RX or s which are just as good if not better, certainly for me they are better.

Srixon Z Star XV?

Callaway Is or Ix or even the new Hex tour (Black or chrome)?

I would say if you've used the V1x before and were happy with it try that.

I would most probably buy the Z star if they actually stocked them in my pro shop, as I've heard good reviews about them and they're cheaper than the Penta and Pro V's. Don't fancy the Callaway balls that much. I'm edging towards the Penta at the moment though...

With all due respect and please take this in the spirit it's intended, but you're off 26, a premium ball really isn't going to help much at this stage. Buy a 'decent' ball and use what you save on lessons.
Have you asked your pro his advice on the most appropriate ball for you at this juncture?

Bucket,

Go for the the ProV1x over the Pents. I used the pentas last season for a whole but found that they chewed up far too easily. I switched to the ProV1 and found them a lot better lasting. I liked the Penta don't get me wrong but was forever picking off the scuffed bits.

I knew this sort of comment would come along :) I'm off 24, but I normally play to about 19/20 (don't play enough comps). I'm after some more greenside control because I have a sharper short game than is reflected by my handicap (long irons let me down). I was also thinking about the new Nxt Tour's too, so you may have half a point ;)

Cheers for the advice mate! I'll definitely take that into consideration

As an aside. Are we talking the new Penta TP5/3 or last seasons Penta TP

If it's last seasons they'll soon be sold out and you'll be asking yourself the same question again... Do I switch to the TP5/3 or try something else?

My advice would be. If you want to try a premium ball, make sure it's one of the current models and not a previous season/discontinued model

I'm on about last years penta as i've heard on here that the new tp5 isn't much kop?

I couldn't speak to that Bucket, I've never tried them.

If it's the "Old" Penta, you may find getting your hands on them harder as they begin to sell out.... Hence my previous post

I honestly don't think you'll be able to really tell the difference in feel or performance.
Unless you're an Elite Amateur or very low Cat 1, your ball striking won't be consistent enough to see any real difference.
Some shots will spin more than others simply due to quality of strike. If you have a variable quality of strike you're not going to see a noticable difference.

This,

i'm cat one and can't tell the difference between a lot of them. The z star certainly feels a bit softer, but plays the same as every other premium ball i use. I play whatever premium ball i pull out of my bag first. To be perfectly honest, i played a few rounds with NXT tours and dx3's recently and was amazed. Other than a higher flight, there wasn't a whole lot of difference. Several times i zipped them back a few feet on short iron approaches, probably due to the higher flight.

I definitely wouldn't discount the second teir balls, plus you'll get twice as many for your dough
