Pebble beach , value or not?

I believe you do have to have a caddy , every group had one that we saw , (dressed in white overalls like Augusta ) and it is customary to tip them . As some have said you can get round the accomodation costs by just turning up , possibly you would get on as a single, but very unlikely as a two ball ,
For me , it looked fantastic , especially the par 3 over the ocean that we viewed from , but at that price , no thanks

As the_coach has said, you can turn and wait for a tee time. But like I said earlier you can't ring up and book a tee-time unless you are staying there.

People I have spoke to have all said they loved playing there, most of them obviously have only played once due to the cost, but they don't regret spending that money one little bit.

The £360 includes fee for Caddy - no reduction if not taken!

It certainly hasn't cost me that the times I've played it!

Neither that nor Pebble are 'good value' imo. Value for money is not the top priority for most that play either though!

I do agree that as a course it is certainly not value for money, the Old Course is a prime example of value against quality. You can pay £160 to play the Old Course, or drive 15 mins up the road and play Scotscraig for £60, which I think as a course is much better, but doesn't offer the experience that the Old Course does.

Question is, would you travel up to Scotland just to play Scotscraig? But the Old a Course is on people's bucket list because of what it is, that is why these courses can charge what they do as people will travel and pay those fees to get a game there.

I played the Old, Jubilee and Castle courses for £220 in October, and got £15 voucher for beers in the clubhouse. Courses in superb condition, and I could choose my tee times. I see they have the same deal for October 2015 for £225 from memory.

Most courses in Britain you can get to play for decent rates if you do a bit of research. I assume Pebble has the one green fee rate the whole year ?

you can book same day tee times - without having to stay at the resort. just ring the pro shop first thing (831) 622-8723- $495 a round (cart extra) club hire $95. (all Callaway clubs) you don't have to hire a caddie (single bag is $80) if you're a single figure player who knows their yardages well might get more out of the round with the local knowledge. certainly would be worth the money on the greens .... if you go & are in for a caddie see if you can hire Robert Lytle or Casey Boyns both would save you a good bunch of shots, particularly on the greens.

bearing in mind Pebble is the no 1 world ranked public course....

Nicklaus said if he could only play one course for the rest of his life he'd choose Pebble.

Good information to have, will be heading out this way next year for a family holiday. Better start sweet talking the wife just now to get permission to play:o

Like most things nowadays, if your willing to put the effort in there are deals out there, it just might take you a few hours. How did you find the Castle course? They were still building it when I left Scotland so never played it. Out of the Old Course and Jubilee which did you think was the best golfing test, forgetting the nostalgia of the Old Course.

Castle is a lovely course except for the greens, which are horrible. You can miss the flag by a few feet, and the ball rolls off the green, off the fairway and finishes in knee high rough.:( I just don't understand why they have made the greens so severe. Amazing setting, incredibly friendly, some lovely driving holes, fairways that are sulptured through high grasses, but the greens would stop me ever returning. One of the few times I have ever got really frustrated on a golf course, and nearly threw more toys out of the pram.

Jubilee is the toughest course, and best golfing test. I probably like the New course best, but if I only had one course to play it would be the Old without doubt. I can remember every shot I played, not just last time, but the time before.

I always felt with the Old Course I could still hack it round in a reasonable when not playing too well. That Jubilee course jumped up and kicked me in the balls a few times though when having an off day. But like you said the Old Course has the history and that special feeling about it, but I got spoilt by having a Links ticket so played it that much it lost that magic for me and found myself playing more on the Jubilee, just for the challenge.

I love these course rankings....so heavily biased in favour of USA courses! Pebble Beach No1 ranked public course? Not in my book, it's only got a handful of good holes by the sea, the rest are average parkland holes. The Old course beats it hands down as a golfing experience, I think I would rather play Sawgrass before Pebble as it's a much tougher test of golf.

It is partly because public golf course is a term really only used in the US, where there are many courses you can't play except as a member or guest of a member. If you look at a ranking of best golf courses, most rankings place the nearby ultra-exclusive Cypress Point above Pebble. A lot of people are wowed by courses they see on TV, which is presumably why anyone thinks The Belfry Brabazon is a good course.

If I paid that money I would demand a 6 hour round. I'd spend the waiting time chipping around the greens.

Unless you get one of the very early tee times, you may well be looking at a 6 hour round, with marshalls telling to you hurry up!

Mr Mimms got the very first tee time at 7am when he played, and had a great time, including a birdie on the par three ?7th (one down by the rocky shore). He played with 2 other single figure hcp players so pace was reasonable. I decided against playing (that amount of money could buy me a LOT of shoes!) but I hired a buggy and went round with them

What a venue! Not one boring hole. Found a few of the bunkers but they were all consistent so relatively easy to escape. Caddy said it's in the best condition he's seen it this season due to the rain over the weekend, seems they had the drought real bad here.
Playing Spanish Bay today which looks interesting as well.

Was on holiday in SanFran with then girlfriend (now wife) in 1988 and did 17mile drive. Went into pro shop at Pebble Beach and it was $100 to play and a tee time was available. I asked my girlfriend if I could. She said we didn't have the time or budget. I didn't play. I still married her - I should've taken that as a warning of things to come...:(
