I read today, with dismay, that Paul Casey has had to withdraw for the US Open on account of an injury sustained whilst snowboarding. I'm a great admirer of Paul Casey, as I am of all our current crop of British and Irish golfer, but it does strike me that for a top golfer to take part in an extra sport, such as snowboarding, is rather foolhardy. The slightest injury to a golfer at Paul's level, must surely have a great effect on his ability to compete and must be the difference between missing or making the cut.

Still, it's good news for the 14 year old rising star Andy Zhang who is now in the field.

Maybe just sit in the house and do nothing then ? Why should any sports man/woman not enjoy any other sports ? any activity, even walking carries risks.

I undersand the point, but at the end of it all he is is his own boss and can live as he chooses.

There were many times in my rugby days when self-employed guys like plumbers and sparkies would break a leg or whatever, which would basically stop them earning for months. Yet they played any way because they loved it.

I guess they felt that a life without a few risks was not as much fun.

Can't stand him personally, comes across as very smarmy. But I do have some sympathy for him as I did the same and it bloody hurts!

I'm surprised their sponsors or insurance people dont have more to say on things like this.

Can you imagine Man. Utd's insurance company letting Rooney go snowboarding?!

Next time you go on a skiing holiday, tell that to your travel insurance company, I'm sure they will agree with you.

Players in a lot of sports get injured from time to time pursuing their leisure activities. He saw it as an acceptable risk and got unlucky. Not a big fan of Casey but still a shame to see a player not being able to compete at the top level

Casey was unlucky to miss out at the last RC, and should have been a shoe-in this year, but because of his mountain biking, snowboarding and other extreme sports, he's ruining a brilliant career. For years he won millions on the tour and been in the top 10, but he's hardly played in the last 2-years because he likes extreme sports. I suppose its his choice, and he has enough money to not bother, but sad all the same that someone of his talent can't be arsed to concentrate on his real job.
