(Partial) Goodbye to golf.. (Hopefully only a temp situation)

Do as they say mate. You know it makes sense. Build an exercise program into your lifestyle (running, cycling..etcc) and believe me your golf will benefit from it. Personally I don't do gyms but people seem to enjoy the social side of them. If I could chose for you just get out there and run. All you need is a pair of trainers and the heart to push yourself. You never know this time next year you could be signing up for the VLM :-). Good luck but take it easy to start with. :-)

Not a fan of running at the best of times, let alone for weight loss. Far too percussive - knees, ankles and hips can suffer badly! Cycling is better, swimming best of all imo!

And V, that 5 year goal is WAY too conservative!

Jogging is very bad for your joints, cycling is mind numbingly boring in the gym, and v dangerous as well as mind numbingly boring on the main roads.

Get a mountain bike. Loads of fresh air, nice views, no traffic, great exercise and excellent fun.

To the OP, did your GP really say that you need to stop playing golf and do something else? If so that seems a little odd. Keep doing the golf I would say and fit in some other form of exercise. No-one is so busy that they can't do a bit of swimming or something.

Cut the plug off your TV would be my first suggestion. Secondly get an app on your phone to track either your swimming, walking or cycling as this will help to give you targets to aim for. Buy something like a Polar Loop perhaps? Great for showing you what you should be doing to stay healthy.

it is not hard to get fit or stay fit. Just do more and eat less rubbish. Simple really. Just needs a bit of will power. :)

Would have thought walking round the course would be ideal exercise, as you build up strength. 9 holes with a bag full of sticks after work where I go certainly is. Could you play a few holes somewhere with a 3 club set and maybe increase distance and carry load over the coming weeks? Wish you all the best.

Why are you giving up golf again? You only have enough time for 4 games of golf a month and the rest is work and family?

30 minutes of brisk walking a day and sorting out your diet will do wonders. You've got to want it.

Look up 23 and a half hours by Dr Mike Evans on YouTube.

As for golf yes it's aerobic exercise (you breath don't you) but your current fitness will determine how much of a training effect you get- 4 times a month isn't a high enough frequency however, maybe this is why the doc doesn't think it counts?

Tnx guys... Will look up the suggestions.

No plan to completely give up golf, hence the title. HID understands that I am an incurable addict, so will get a game or so every month provided I sign up to the gym or something. I agree a lot of it also about lifestyle changes incl food - apparently Quinoa is the new superfood. Unfortunately HID is an awesome cook, and I am partial to a good steak and curry (separately). Ironically, golf has resulted in reduction in alcohol intake esp on Fridays. I have realised that it takes a longer time to recover these days, hence have give up my social pint on golf nights.

My immediate aim is to break 90 - weight and score.

Ps:In Mumbai today, and managed to get invited to the members only Wellingdon Club. The humidity is enuf to drain about two bucket loads of sweat before the end of the game. Played another course last week. Did not know the yardage or how far I cud hit the rented clubs. Absolutely loved the round.. Would have been even lower if it was not for a wonky putter.

Pps: given that a large proportion of GM readers would be in the Middle Ages and are shooting their weight rather than their age, GM could do a short section on lifestyles - covering food, yoga, exercise etc...

18 holes in 2.5 hours x 3 times a week = Exercise.
18 holes in 4.5 hours x 3 times a month = A waddle.

Good luck OP.
Please take your doctors advice.
Eat less and better and exercise more.

Maybe a small adjustment needed :D

Lot of points about CV exercise for this thread, but diet will count a lot for reducing cholesterol as much,if not more.
I believe in moderation, I run, golf eat well, drink and i am in my late 40's, and so far the cholesterol is well balanced with good and bad, bad being well under 5.Hope to keep it that way,but the older you get,the harder it gets.
Good luck with the lifestyle changes.

Didn't there used to be a thread on here for people trying to lose weight and they kept updating it weekly? Try start that again and maybe some support from other weight loss wannabees will help? If you don't like running go for a walk, if you have a dog go out with that or failing that out with the wife or kids. Walk to the shops (if they are close enough) rather than driving. Might sound soft but you can get 10 min workout dvd's or failing that watch them on youtube and do them in your front room (curtains closed).

I'm constantly on a diet and know how hard work it can be, weight goes up and down depending on your mood and spare time but try stick to it and you'll see the benefits with more energy, more confidence, better sleep and general just feeling a lot better in yourself. Its hard but stick with it and stick with the golf too.

Your doc sounds like a muppet as walking four miles can be just as beneficial running four miles, however its not sufficient to lose weight as it cant increase your metabolic rate. I dont think you need to give up golf though as you could do 3 days of 30mins high intensity excercise in your house - jobs a good un
