I always thought par for a hole was purely based on the length of the hole, I was looking at the card for Ellesmere and see there is a ladies par 5 which is only 383yds, whereas there is a par 4 that is 406 yds.

Its puzzling me.

Does seem strange & i thought the same as yourself Louise . is there a mad couple of dog legs in it or something ?

EDIT>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Just googled it its the 8th hole yea . something strange even the pro tip sounds strange .....
Like the 8th hole this is another hole the majority of members play as a par 5. Beware of the stream which lies in wait in front of the green.

It says like the 8th hole .. it is the 8th hole ??/ very strange

I see the 6th is 393 par 5 for the ladies also.. all short par 5 cept the 17th for ye ..

I think I remember reading an article saying that there are 10 things taken into consideration for selecting the par of a hole.

The things I can think of are length (possibly foremost), hazards, SSS for that hole over the year (possibly), elevation changes etc.

I am sure someone else would have more knowledge on this though.

The oldies will know bogey used to mean par until the Americans got involved.
They changed it to 'par' and we followed, much like the small/large golf ball

The Pro tips are a bit mixed up Bladeplayer.

The 14th is 153yds, Protips says: A wide fairway that does not narrow until 240 yards where well placed bunkers can grab a long tee shot, the green is set in a deep hollow. Favour the right side of the marker with your approach and beware of being long as the green is surrounded by water down the left and at the rear

Par 3 - up to 210
Par 4 - 180 to 430
Par 5 - 370 to 620
Par 6 - 560 plus

Other factors apart from length have to be taken into account e.g. uphill/downhill, doglegs, water hazards etc..

Certainly not always pure length based. Often hazards come into it.

Both those holes are tough par 4s off Wites/Yellows tees but medium of Reds. Could be that ditch on 11 deemed not to come into play so much off Reds (at 240/250 off Whites?). 8 could be uphill (likely nopt with a stream though). And the stream in front of green may force most Red players to lay up. And prevailing wind can also affect deemed Par.

SIs don't always indicate difficulty - they are meant to balance Matchplay for varying handicaps.
