I didn't realise this until earlier today, but Paolo Maldini retires at the end of this season. He's got 2 games left, this weekend at the San Siro, and away to Fiorentina next weekend. I've just had a look at his page on Wikipedia, and the figures are outstanding.

He made his debut as a 16 year old in 1984, and in a career which has lasted 25 years he's made exactly 900 1st team competitive appearences for AC Milan and been capped 126 times for Italy. He's won 7 Serie A titles and 5 European Cups.

When we talk of football legends this mans name should be at the top of the list.

AC Milan are retiring the No. 3 shirt after this season, and have said they'll only bring it back if one of Maldini's sons ever makes the Milan 1st team. His oldest son plays for Milan's youth side, and his 5 year old younger son can tackle like this.

Don't worry....when Ancelotti becomes boss of Chelsea , he'll prob come over to the Bridge for one big pay day !!!

Yup chelsea have to buy glory... They dont have one player in there team who has come through the youth.

Care to think again Mono ?

Nope.... :D

Seriosly thought who is in your first team who has come through the ranks.

Actually they do have a great youth policy at Chelsea and I'm pretty sure they have been close in the FA youth cup over the last few years.

Maldini is a legend and I guess never really got the recognition certainly as an international he deserved. I think he got recognised off the back of Milans success but he is a class act. His nipper looks tasty too

How about the England captain ?...and players that have played first team football this year ? Mancienne , Stoch , Sinclair . Homer is correct in that the Chelsea youth policy is pretty good but as to how many of those will actually come through , well , thats debatable .

Gotta agree with you regarding Maldinis recognition there Homer but thats the downside to being a defender, most people only remember the flair players and the goalscorers.

Ask any football person to name a worlds greatest team of the last 30 years and I guarantee Maldini will be in at least 95% of teams.

A true legend of the game.
