Over-rated Bands / Musicians

I'm a big Queen fan so I've glossed over the tosh some have posted  . With a band such as Queen, along with many others, if you release enough albums, you are bound to have fillers in there, name me an album that doesn't? Put together a Greatest Hits album though and every one is a banger. It's not even a struggle to fill that album. They probably warrant a double album / cd of belters.

Anyone putting Queen in their list is looking for clicks. (walks away in a huff) 😂

I’ve got their greatest hits album, and it is excellent. We also went to see We Will Rock You at the Dominion theatre several times. Pick their good stuff, brilliant!

Now, I love rock/metal but Led Zep do nothing for me - friends don't really understand that and I have tried to listen to some of their stuff but just don't get it. For me, over-rated but for millions of others, not.
I would add the Beatles to my list as well.
The issue is probably that I didn't really start listening to/buying music until the early 80's, so missed the 60's/70's

Oasis are were far superior to the Beatles imo.
I don’t mind a few U2 songs.
Bono is really annoying tho.
Context is everything

Oasis would not exist if it hadnt been for the Beatles, Their influence is so huge, so massive, that the entire popular music /rock combo genre would look very different now had Lennon & McCartney become bricklayers.
You simply cannot compare them, Chalk n cheese, different eras etc

That’s a myth.
They maybe wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the Stone Roses.

I loved Oasis when they were out. best weekend of my life was watching City beating Utd 3-1 at Maine rd in the last Derby game and then watching Oasis the day after at Notts ice.
My son loves Manc music. I remember him saying to me one day “dad Ave discovered a group, there called Stone roses”. 😳 about 25 years after they formed. That for me is a group that is a quality group, one that stands the test of time. Be it the roses, oasis, Beatles Weller etc etc.
unfortunately some of our heroes have or soon will be now knocking on the doors of the pearly gates. ☹️

There have been a lot of bands and artists mentioned.
I am not aware of much "hype" surrounding them.
If you sell albums and fill concert halls by supplying a music product that appeals to enough people, then there is little or no "hype".

If your product has little or nothing to do with the actual music, but is built almost solely on image and marketing, and yet you sell records and fill concert halls, then this is "hype".

That is why Osmonds and Bay City Rollers came to my mind.
A more recent one would be Spice Girls, in my view.

But that's entertainment.

At the end of the day there's no right or wrong answers on this...
There's no such thing as bad music...just music you like and music you don't...
It would be prdull if we all liked the same stuff....

If only you’d posted this as the first reply, could have saved any discussion 😂

I can't really agree with this bit and I believe I am about to prove it.
Last time I posted this link I think you were only just able to stop short of a death threat towards me for doing so.

Indeed, and that’s the point made by Andy Edwards. He thinks they are a great singles band and their greatest hits albums are banging. But over the piece Queen just are not quite as mega as their fans and some others proclaim…

And same for Pink Floyd. Edwards loves The Piper… and Echoes (off Meddle) through to Animals, though it’s really only Dogs on the latter he thinks is up there with Dark Side and Wish You Were…both of which he says are magnificent albums even though he’s not a huge Floyd fan. Note that, he’s not a great fan but recognises a brilliant album when he heard it.

And to upset many, his view on Dave Gilmour solos of post Animals albums…well…guitar solos no matter how excellent, do not great albums make. They make great guitar solos beloved by dads of a certain age for whom the magnificent three or four albums are so intrinsic and core to their music life.

What?

Pink Floyd is not just about Gilmour - they had a quite decent keyboard player and a quite decent drummer and a quite decent bass player in the band if I remember correctly.

The bass guy can't sing though...
