So who will replace Tom Watson on the course as the true gent we know him to be? Who will be the new character of golf in a few years to replace Jimenez?

We have a few very dominant characters throughout the game right now, but who are the young pretenders that will replace them all?

Justin Rose. He has the credibility being a Major winner, he knows what it is like to miss cut after cut, so he has a sympathy with the plight of the lesser players and he seems like a decent chap.

Ok I'll admit it

Never been a fan of Watson - I remember watching him in the 80's and just something about him that just didn't like.

I put him in the Gary Player bracket - seem to have this "lovable" aura around them that I believe isn't right with them both.

I'm with you on that one Phil - I don't quite buy into the whole Saint Tom image.

Davis love seems like the old wise head of golf who many people appear to respect.

For me Tom is a credit to the profession and the game of golf and has earnt huge respect from the British public.

I did go off him slightly during the Ryder cup because he was so aloof to the media and come across as slightly offish.

I wonder about Tom Watson after the Ryder Cup...

I think there are a lot of characters our there that we don't get to know.

i'm not sure why people expect top sportsmen to be "saints" - to win 8 majors presumably requires incredible self confidence, resilience, tenacity etc - not necessarily traits that are going to make you warm and fuzzy all the time.

Nobody. Its not just a case of replacing certain individuals with new ones. Players like Seve, Watson, Jimenez etc were / are unique. They are what they are. They don't come along on a conveyor belt replacing someone else and then someone else replacing them. There will be new players with their own personalities and traits that will either be loved or despised by the golfing public. Trying to pigeon hole players as replacements really is futile.

From what Lawrence Donegan and John Huggan say on their podcast, Gary Player is not a particularly nice man. they certainly dont like him!

Have very little time for Player. Heard him on 5 Live on Monday morning. The interviewer tried everything to get him talking about The Open but he was having none of it. Only wanted to talk about how many sit ups he can do and how unfit the world is.

Hold the front page. I agree. I couldn't warm to Watson in his prime but couldn't put my finger on why. I warmed to him as he got older (and went close at the Open). Player is another I never really liked. Again couldn't give you a reason why.

Are there any in the same bracket as Watson etc? Els maybe as a multi major winner but who else

It appears that if you look a little deeper into Watson he's not a particularly likeable man, his open performances in the last few years appear to have done him a favour in terms of gaining a fan base.

I don't like Gary Player, find him to be false and big headed.

There are a few characters out there on tour, anyone who is well spoken always goes down well, so the likes of GMAC and Ogilvy. But even Spieth speaks excellently which is rare for someone at the very top of the game.

Stenson is good laugh

Harrington for me is just the best

Snedeker is a good example of how to play right. Doesn't mess around, just hits the ball

Ditto. When they were younger, didn't really warm to either of them, probably to that air of self belief they carry which often comes across as arrogance....... I have warmed to Tom as he's gotten older, especially when he came close in the Open the other year, but Player's still a cold fish for me. Having said that, they both have my utmost respect for their achievements in the game, which I guess balances out their demeanor a little.

Character wise I don't see anyone standing out in a Jimenez sort of way, other than Jimenez. There are a number of players that communicate and carry themselves well, including Rosey, Rory, Spieth and Stenson, but we'll have top wait and see how they are in 10 or 20 years.

I find this quite interesting. Gary Player is big headed and arrogant so is not liked but Seve was adored.

Now I adored Seve, probably my favourite player ever but surely we can agree he was big headed and had his fair share of arrogance.

This is a bit of a devil's advocate kind of post, Seve was/ still is the best to grace a golf course in my opinion. And as a man he was tremendous!

I reckon whilst Seve was arrogant like you saw he was also a bit cheeky with it - there was a charm about him and a bit of flair with a smile and a wink.

Player just seems cold and wanting to be loved like Palmer etc
