Snooper S400 works for me, good value at less than £150.00

I have a mate - a Pro (yes P148!) - who will very likely be importing some Bushnell equivalents that will be priced 'competitively'. I've seen the sample one and it's fine. Not sure when, how many and what price though! I know the price he gets them at but there are probably negotiations required - he wants them in about 10/time initially, the supplier would like them 100/time! - so it may be a while yet.

So it's possible that they can be acquired. Meantime, the Snooper seems the 'best value' one about. Or 2nd hand/through Ebay, though that has some risk. I actually sold a Nikon 350G, that I hadn't been using, to a member here and it had a problem (unknown to me) that cost nearly as much for Nikon to fix as the price that was paid!

so since posting this i have just been to the bank and it turns out i have 300 quid more in my account than i thought i did :P might go for a slightly pricier one :)

of course if i buy a pricier one it will have to be worth the extra cash, battery usage, size and what its like looking through it, I'm not going to spend an extra £100 just for a bushnell badge......

The Bushnell is worth the extra money and you are not just paying for the badge.

can i ask what bushnell you use I'm looking at the v2 or the medalist at the moment, will have to go to the store and have a look at both of them before i decide but like to have an idea of what im gong to be looking at first

V3 tour - best one I have used - clear through the lens , picks up the target quickly and clearer , simple to use and a nice buzz when you hit the target. Battery life appears very good

its more expensive but will give that one a look too although will have to be quite a bit better for me not to feel quilty spending the extra cash on it :P thanks for you help

Possibly a stupid question, but do optical rangefinders work equally in measuring distance to trees, fairway bunkers, water etc or is it only possible to lock them on to pins? I borrowed one recently while in the US but didn't think to try it for anything but the pin. I currently have a garmin GPS which I've had since 2012 but am thinking about getting a rangefinder so I don't have to update the gps software every time I leave the UK. A major benefit of the GPS though is the ability to measure distances to hazards etc and I don't want to lose that functionality. Cheers

Yep.

As long as you can point the device at it it will measure it. That's the 'advantage' of GPS - you don't need to be able to see the target as everything has been pre-mapped.

I have a couple of mates who carry both!

V2 could well be at reasonable price these days. Buzz is useful, but not essential - though carrying case is far superior imo. That one from Lakeballs looks great value (it'll be Chinese, but no problem with that; Lakeballs are fine to deal with in my experience) and Snooper seems pretty good too. As long as it's got Pin-seeker or equivalent (nearest target priority) it will be fine.

I had a Bushnell V2 which was stolen. I replaced it with a Nikon, quite an expensive one. The Nikon is not a patch on the Bushnell, harder to focus & it gives a lot of false readings. Also, although the Bushnell was a bit bigger, it took a rechargeable battery. The Nikon has a lithium battery and, apparently, rechargeable lithium batteries can be dangerous so none of the reputable manufacturers make them. Save yourself some money & buy a used Bushnell.
