The majority of people have a pre-concieved idea of what a traveller is and can potentially get up to.Sometimes that can be challenged and layed to rest, more often peoples insincts are correct though.I'd be doing something (legal) if my local council decided to site a group like this close to my house.

we had a large site set up in the area by the council.
their kids were sent to a local school. it didn't take long before local parents were trying to get their kids out. This was due to bullying, theft and outright assualt by kids of primary school age backed up by their 'uncles'.
This is not rumour; I was a governor at a nearby school at the time so we got all the reports.

policing was also a problem as they would only enter the site mob-handed.

we know they need sites but all too often the infrastructure of the designated areas is just not designed to cope.

If they're given sites to stay at permanently and their kids go to school and they get jobs and they pay council tax and income tax and road tax, fair enough.
If they want to opt out of mainstream society, why should they be given everything free of charge.

If anything was nicked in the area, all plod had to do was have a quick look at the site and often the stolen goods would be recovered.

They did not send their children to school, so the kids are largely uneducated, what chance have they got.

They basically were little more than animals.

Our local paper has an ongoing vendetta against the 'rogue travellers' as they call them and you could get a job with them no bother at all, they spout the same nonsense!!

Thieving is done by the travellers!!

I will gladly send you stats confirming that my area is virtually crime free WITH TRAVELLERS AS NEIGHBOURS!!

Maybe you prefer your local lad brought up in your midst, educated locally, not an animal (in your opinion) but, as we have experienced in the last two weeks - with a gun.......!!

Maybe thieving to feed a habit has not yet hit your area but these poor souls are not travellers but the children of your neighbours.

To call a travellers child an animal is beyond contempt!

In my Church a family are educating their own children so their offsprings have 'no chance and are uneducated' in your opinion.

And there's me thinking that I had written a balanced account of the way I see things, even looking at both sides of the problem.

Just shows that some people will take a particular comment out of context to further their own agenda

Of course I dont regard "Home educated" kids as second class citizens, because the people doing the education have the necessary skills.

What would be the outcome if illiterate, unskilled people tried to trach children from any walk of life, they cant do it, it doesnt work. Yet this is what happens in many travellers camps.

And bringing the tragic events of Cumbria into the arugement is just crass stupidity.

Im glad that the travellers in your area are decent law abiding citizens.

That scenario sadly is not replicated elsewhere

I am sorry that I did not take your presentation as 'balanced' but uneducated, thief and animal took the 'balance' away, for me - maybe others are different and also see them, the travellers, in this light.

The use of Cumbria helped, in my opinion, to illustrate that it is easy to label people but the problem often comes from the least likely source, as per this case and was a current situation.

We will just have to agree to differ on this I am afraid as I find it difficult to 'broad-brush' a people wither they are Scots, Irish, Welsh, English or Travellers.

I wonder what the national break down of the pikey empire is?I'll hazard a guess at mostly English/Irish.Us Jocks are too busy partaking in binge drinking and sectarian football violence to fit pikey-related activities into our already hectic itineraries.

Our local council are proposing to place a Pikey site on a small country park near our village. Does anyone on here have any sound advice about stopping this going ahead.

Its easy to have a "they have to stay somewhere" attitude, but last time they parked up on a Comet car park near my workplace they broke in and stole some of my equipment (seen on cctv and identified) so dont say that we should treat them as friends and neighbours!

I know my views are not born of racism just a desire to still own what I purchased! and not worry every time I see a bunch of caravans parked on someones private land. I understand in Ireland (where a lot eminate from) that they have introduced proper trespass laws so it doesn't cost thousands on a court order to evict them from your private land and you dont have to provide toilets and clear up after them when the judiciary finally agrees to move them on to the next sucker!

I can see it now - the room full of left wing, Guardian reading, tweed wearing overweight women ranting about the rights of Lesbians and gay men to adopt children and how they despise white, straight men who, in their opinion, should be shot at birth.

No, this country doesn't need diversity training or 'Lesbian out reach workers' - it needs common sense. The people in power appear on paper to be very well educated but have absolutely no common sense. An example - Boris Johnson - I rest my case.
