I've waited until the end of this season to swap my irons. Bit of a treat for myself for a good year.

I've tried a number of clubs over the past 2-3 weeks.

Mizuno JP800-Pro, MP-53, MP-58. Titleist AP1's and 2's. Ping i15.

I had a fitting at the belfry a few weeks back and hit the ball awful that day. Just couldn't stop coming over the top and sending everything right, which isn't my normal shot shape. The fitter recommended either JPX-800 Pro's or the AP1's, Stiff shafts with a +4deg lie angle !! Knowing I wasn't hitting the ball how I normally do I decided not to order there and then, but go away and have a think.

But I did get a good feel for the clubs I liked on the occasional good ones.

I narrowed it down to the MP-53, 58's and the i15's.

I've been up the range this evening for about 1.5 hours, but also took out the s56's as they had a demo club in the bag.

After about half 45 mins I excluded both the mizuno's. I really like the look of them but the shot dispersion was worse than both pings. And the 'bad' hits were worse.

Spent the remaining time hitting the two pings and to my surprise I hit the s56's much better.

Both had similar dispersion and distance but the strike with the s56's just felt so much sweeter and had a much better flight.

tbh, I'd be happy with either club.

So, any opinions ?

I love my i15's, I was absolutely nailing them yesterday. And despite what people may say, although they're cast I didn't feel the ball leave the club face. Flushed them and some of my best ball striking for bloody ages.
But had the S56's come out at the same time, I think I would have bought those instead. They are one mean looking club. Either ones and you'll be happy.

Mizuno irons can be ordered in mixed sets, so you can mix MP53 and 58's if you want, say 4-7 MP53, 8 - PW 58, or something like that.

I think the 53 is a great looking iron, and a club that suits a wide range of players especially if you have been carefully fitted for the right shaft.

I have hit both the S56 and the I15. I really wanted to hit the S56's well but it wasn't to be and I didn't really do them justice. The I15's though I've hit on a few ocassions now and I have to agree with everything Smiffy says about them. If wasn't a case of just changing for the hell of it I'd have given in to their calling and got a set by now.

I'd like to give the S56 another shot. It was at a Ping demo day and so all a bit rushed and I'd already played 18 holes in the morning. I think fresher and more relaxed I might feel differently.

I was due to test all the Mizuno range this weekend but a culmination of me swinging poorly during Saturday's round and a small domestic issue with a lawn mower and some chicken wire after the stableford yesterday (don't ask but HID is banned from mowing the grass) put paid to that. I'm away next weekend so won't get to try them until the end of the month now.

It sounds as if the OP has narrowed it down to the Pings and I really can't see an issue with either model. Just to confuse matters further the new Ping wedges are totally awesome too

I read this as being inconsistent, one of the reasons I havent went for a CF session, Swing changes daily so why try to fit for a good or a bad day?

The belfry session certainly wasn't a normal hitting day. Probably something to do with the 3 hour drive and my back being really stiff when I arrived.

That's why I decided to wait.

I'm going to hit the clubs again at the end of the week and probably again next week. To see if I still feel the same though.

Have you thought of looking at Callaway irons? I have a good set of these although my feeling is that I am biased based on the shafts I have which fit me and my swing perfectly.

I am not really up on what is current in the Callaway range but the Pro Series irons I have are terrific.

Snelly.

Da do be do de do wha..................yeah!!

Apologies to Leonard Bernstein.

TBH. It took me almost 6 weeks to decide on the MX300's, but they were the ones I kept coming back to and using them as a bench mark when trying out all the other makes.

Are you able to take a demo club out on the course with you? I found this to be a great help. One advantage of using the Pro shop I guess.

I was thinking about seeing if I can do it this weekend if I can get a second round in. Got a comp on Sunday so might not be able to play both days. Don't want to risk it in the comp.

Eh?

He mentioned 2 Mizuno models and only one set of old bugger clubs.

Oh yeah

Move along. Nothing to see here. You won't be fobbing somebody off with your Mizuno crap on this thread.
The force is strong in this one

Westy for what it's worth I'm surprised you didn't give the AP1s another go and haven't tried the AP2s. That said it sounds as though the S56s fit the bill for you so hope they behave while you retest over the next three weeks and beyond :)

The only person who can decide is yourself. In my opinion the S56 is a sexy looking little number. Their is absolutely no harm in going to an authorised Ping fitter now and getting C/F for the Pings.

As Ethan said earlier, getting the correct shaft is a huge factor in the c/f process.

I might give the AP2's another go. They have a fitting cart at my place so I might take the S56 and the AP2 out together and compare. I did like the feel of the AP2 when I hit a good one at the Belfry. But probably hit it the worst of all the clubs I tried.

Only trouble is if I get Ap2's my mate is going to mug me for em. He's in love with the clubs but can't quite afford them as he has a nipper on the way.
