One shot/Two shot penalty

the only rule of thumb I use to remind me of a certain penalty regarding 1 clublength or 2 is if you are getting penalized 1 stroke you are entitled to 2 clublengths relief. Not exactly what you are asking but maybe useful

It's not always true but an infringement of a rule caused by the player's actions is usually a two shot penalty (examples; playing wrong ball, giving advice, grounding club in hazard, holing out on green with flag still in hole, teeing off from outside teeing ground) whereas if it's a result of the playing of a stroke or taking relief it's usually a one shot penalty (examples, hitting ball twice in stroke, penalty drop from hazard, ball declared unplayable, ball moves after address, accidentaly hitting ball into players own equipment).

That's the type of answer I was looking for.

As said, a rule book in the bag is the best option. However, when playing a social round and players waiting behind, it doesn't look good to start thumbing through your rule book.

We pulled out the rule book Saturday during the Medal just to be sure of a ruling, I don't think anyone would mind waiting a minute behind something who is trying to do the right thing. Nice rule of thumb there Crow.
