One Plane Swing Short Game Question

So im using a one plane swing with hands on swing plane at address. Really happy with long game, but i find this a bit awkward when hitting 100 yard shots and under. Im struggling to get the same control as per long game, in terms of dispersion of shots and also i tend to struggle with distance (either way too long or short).

Im trying to clear my hips out the way before impact and do mainly the same procedure as normal for long game.

Any one planers with experience with this?

Is 1PS (vs 2PS) of particular significance for these shots?

You are normally not using a full swing for Pitch shots - and Chipping has its own technique(s).

I'd suggest you try checking out the Pelz or Utley 'methods' and see which one suits you best.

Getting obsessed with methods that are unsuited to the situation is counter-productive imo.

Possibly, my setup isnt the norm- its a 1PS with hands on swing plane at address. My spine angle is around 15% and i have a wide stance. I get great accuracy with this. With the short game im using the same approach but im doing a lesser backswing of course.

Im happy to try any method really.

a one plane swing is perfect for the short game but you should narrow your stance for pitch shots and no need to clear the hips with any sort of aggressive power inducing movement. Just swing with a controlled tempo to a nice high finish and let the length of back swing dictate your distance. I would highly recommend a look at Dave Pelz short game bible for a great demonstration between the two types of swing in the long game and short game.

You seem to be making the assumption that I care about the difference between the two :D

And you are making the (incorrect imo) assumption that Greg's post was aimed at you!

Though I think the 2 swings he mentions are 'Full' and 'Finesse' as opposed to 1PS and 2PS.

He shouldn't have replied to my post then :D

I thought it was aimed at me as I said I didn't know what the difference was and am making the assumption that the OP already does.

Anyhow, it doesn't matter, if it wasn't aimed at me, I apologise

Surely it is all about distance and spin control. This is one area where once you have a reliable technique (see the winter practice thread) it is an easy to repeat action. Even I don't have any issues with this area!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Another one who likes the Dave Pelz book. His methods hit the spot for me. The section on distance wedges, the "clock" swings and having stock distances makes a ton of sense and is something I'm incorporating into my game.

Its a shame his books are padded out with graphs, tables and his scientific proofs. I'm sure they could be half as many pages if he just stuck to the golf instruction part.

Yes you are quite right regarding Pelz but I was meaning the finesse swing he shows is very much a 1 plane swing. For top golfers who in general have a two plane swing they would usually swing on a single plane during pitch shots (although it often looks like the 2 plane swing the don't reroute and drop it into the 'slot' on the way back down. There are always exceptions of course like Furyk who reroutes all shots to wonderful effect especially out of bunkers.

I base my swing around jim hardy's book and theory's on one plane swings. Like you I suffered with partial shots and small pitches. I found I was too flat on the backswing. As your stood closer to the ball and the club is shorter I found I was taking the club too inSide and approaching the ball from too Inside.
Try going the range and trying a steeper backswing. If you can record it you may find its not as steep as you think.

very good point, the shorter the club the closer you stand to the ball and therefore the steeper the swing plane will be
