One hit wonders.

Really one hit wonders... 8 UK No1 singles and several albums later before breaking up suggests otherwise.

As for 1 hit wonders Chesney Hawk's
He performed in a club when I was about 20. There must have been 20 lasses my age seeing along to all his other "hits"!! They had to have been plants. The other 300 there had no clue about em.

I was going to say that one! Great song.

Just gonna throw some out from the Wiki page on one hit wonders...

Mamba No 5
Macarena
Tainted Love
Come On Eileen
99 Red Balloons
Spirit in the Sky
Teenage Dirtbag

My mate bought the Lou Bega album after Mambo No5. The second song was exactly the same tune with slightly different lyrics.

He also bought Eiffel65's album because of Blue (Da ba Dee)

I take it that's an American list? Soft Cell had plenty other hits here, and Dexy's had another number one with Geno!

You have had a mare there. I am guessing you are inferring both Soft Cell and Dexys Midnight Runners. Go forth and educate yourself, the 80's were my time. Soft Cell were one of the great bands of the 80's. Get yourself a Soft Cell / Marc Almond compilation, great stuff. Dexys had plenty of hits as well.

In fairness I could not have named you another song from either band. Even after looking up their discography, the only other Soft Cell I recognise is the one that David Gray did a successful cover of, and I have no idea of any of the other Dexys ones. So yeah, they're still one hit wonders.

I can only name one Elvis song, so he must be a one hit wonder too.

There's some weird definitions of one hit wonders in this thread. Call me old fashioned but I thought it was acts that have only had one record that charted, usually quite high. Not acts who had one famous song but actually had quite a few more that charted but were not as famous. So here's one of my favourites

Blimey, educate yourself man, Say hello Wave Goodbye is a stone cold classic from Soft Cell and they had 5 top 5 singles in the early 80s. And Geno got to number one from Dexys! And as any Philomena Cunk fan knows, they also wrote the theme form Brushstrokes. ;)

So all this thread is showing is that most people don’t have a clue that being a one hit wonder doesn’t mean the same as having only one mega famous song that’s stood the test of time over the rest of a band’s back catalogue.
