My router is showing lots of activity (before starting the pc or any iPad etc) with the green light flickering very fast the same way it does when I'm downloading, except nothing is on........

Making me think someone else is using my password protected BB, is there a way I can check to see if anyone else is connected? or to find out why it's very active and I'm not downloading (been like this for at least an hour so far)

Thanks

Do you have neighbours in close proximity to you, if not then I wouldnt worry, a router only has an effective range of 30 metres depending on thickness of walls etc,

If in doubt pull the power plug out of the router and wait 30 seconds, put it back and wait for 5 minutes, is it better now

If not I can talk you through getting inside the router control panel

Who is your broadband through and what make is the router

Thanks Phil, SKY and a Sky router, neighbours about 2 meters.

If not them what else would make it go into a frenzy like that for hours with nothing connected here?

access your router by typing 192.168.0.01 into IE or whatever you use. This "should" bring up a password style login box. for my sky for example, the standard username and password is Admin and Sky. Within the router settings you should be able to see a list of connected devices, these will all have been allocated an IP address. you can go round each device you own and find the IP. Any that you cant allocate could be rogue devices and you can block them.

In windows 7, type "cmd" in the search after pressing the windows button, then type "ipconfig" this will give you your IP.

On iphone/ipad, go to settings, wifi, then clcik the blue arrow next you your SSID.

Thanks Rooter, theres 3 devices attached .02, .03, .05 (however, the light has stopped flashing fast now) so when it does again I'll do what you say and see whats doing this, or could it be the router itself updating its own software or running tests etc?

I think it's trying to tell you the dishwasher is finished

Its very likely nothing to worry about, sometimes the ISP's run line tests in the background,

In order to access your wifi, others must have had access to your house, (the wifi code is often on a sticker on the router)
or they have software capable of breaking the code. ( unlikely)

Id just keep a watching brief

Could even be something like your sky TV box doing an update...

Run a trace route through Windows, this will show how many active connections are using your broadband.
Beyond that, information packets will be sent and received even when you are not using it.

If you need more help just PM me and I can get the line checked for you.
