I have never understood a retired persons need to get on the course as early as possible. Maybe they cannot get away from the other half quick enough.[/QUOTE]

You've got it wrong - they get there straight from an all night rave.

Welcome news that the longest day has gone. Won't really see the benefits for a few weeks yet but will be nice to start going home in a modicum of daylight again and it means the countdown to the season is on

The winter solstice actually occurred yesterday morning, the point when the sun was directly over the Tropic of Capricorn and doesn't sink further south, so today is the solar New Year's Day. The calendar New Year's Day is of course on the 1st January within the Gregorian calendar.
2020 is a leap year because the Earth takes 365.25 days to orbit the sun. This explains why the winter solstice was not on the 21st December this year.
Even the sun is shining right now. It's no wonder ancient people thought they were living in last times with the ever increasing darkness, and 25th December was the confirmation that good had triumphed over evil. This gave the festival of Sol Invictus among others in the northern hemisphere. Christianity merely hijacked this for their own purpose and propaganda.
