Numbers are just additional identification marks to me. But I would never, ever, ever use a 'REFURB'. They are cack.

You hit a No.1 one off the tee, think you may have lost it, so play a number 2 as provisional. So you can then tell which is which if you find both. (If you can't tell which is which, you can break a shedful of rules and rack up many a penalty shot)
When I buy mine, I mix them up so that each sleeve of three has three differently numbered balls in it. Makes it easy to ensure that you don't play two with the same number. I've always wondered why they don't come supplied with three different numbers in a sleeve?

I only use white wooden tee's and the number 2 ball. Plus I never hit off the 1st tee with a new ball.
