Notre dame

Shocking live pictures being streamed, the tower and roof has now collapsed and the scaffolding where work was being undertaken is all alight now also.

It gives the impression they’ve lost the fight to control it!

Not sure what, if any artefacts are/were in it?

Initial news seems to be that fire likely caused due to refurbishment, and this has also meant a good number of artefacts had been removed from the site.

Personal view is that yes - it's a tragedy, but also an opportunity. Nothing that is physical really lasts for ever and in that respect the 700 or so years that the Cathedral has been in existence, is a moment in time.

The city of Paris has an opportunity to rebuild / reshape / redesign the building and no doubt they will do a stylish and sympathetic job.

Hope to god they don't go to Liverpool or coventry on how to do a “ modern “
Cathedral.

Don't know the buildings, but seems like the external walls are intact so possibly a roof rebuild - but no doubt there will be internals that will be redone and will have a contemporary feel.

Grant have you seen the inside. Hardly any of the stone roof had caved in. 😳
Saw it on the news and i was gobsmacked. Couple of roofers round here could be topside that job inside a month. 👍

I am sure there are members of "the caravan club" who have already submitted their tenders for this and will trim the trees and lay a new driveway while they're at it.
*any rubbish will be dumped in the nearest country lane

It's probably been roofers using a blow torch that caused it , I hope they have full cover insurance :devilish:

Very sad when something like this happens to such an important historic building. It looks like the firefighters done a great job and managed to save a substantial portion of the building. Hopefully, the money pledged so far will help restore the Cathedral to its former glory in the coming years.

It was a fantastic building and a tragedy but at the end of the day (IMO) that's what it is - a building.

I confess to feeling that some of the huge donations strike me a somewhat obscene. While I would defend someone's right to spend their money how they want it just worries me that £200m from one person and £100m from another plus £100m from Total could be used to change the lives and futures of so many others. (e.g. the Bill Gates Foundation comes to mind).

I wait to see how much the 'Church' coughs up or will hypocrisy continue to rule.
