Starting to get really fed up with this now especially as our temps are gash.

Ok its winter, but I'm just dying for a proper game and getting fed up with bashing balls down the range now. I know that you can not dictate the weather but to have a half decent set of temps would be very nice, for example our 1st Temp has three holes the same size on it, one for the flag and the other two due to furry animals!

Rant over!

Playing on Thursday and really looking forward to getting out on decent fairways and proper greens. Another game booked on Sunday on a fairly well draining course so fingers crossed!

When I played at Crowborough the temporary greens there were next to useless. There isn't a level lie around the whole course and on the fifth hole you could putt up to the temp and the ball would roll all the way back down to your feet (and past them) with no problem at all!
The club pro 5 putted that green from 3 feet once!

We have two true winter greens which are fine, once makes the par 3 hard as its 135 yards and you have a width of about 7 yards & length of 20 yards to land on, to the left is a sharp down slope with a deep bunker and the right is a steep hill with the summer green on which if up thin it runs over the green and down the hill :sob:

The rest are real bad, just fairway with a hole and flag, they are only in use if the course is flooded.

Ditto, 3 weeks minimum on temps. I have Friday off when I get home, really lookig for some weather improvement. 20 degrees here in PRC, but clubs at home. Worse news still, I unexpectedly have a free day tomorrow, mission hills 2 miles away, clubs/shoes at home. Damn. Bad planning. No point in hiring stuff, golf is £130 per round, and if paying that much, I don't want to blame hired kit for playing like a wally.

I dont really see what your problem is to be honest. The bottom line is the greenkeeper is paid to do a job, he is obviously protecting the greens for a valid reason. If playing on winter greens for the months of January and February mean that the greens are in tip top condition come April then I'm all for it. Shortened daylight hours, no heat, reduced (if any) growth, potential for real damage are all concerns for the club.

You dont play competitions all the time in the winter, you have restricted daylight hours, winter is about keeping the swing going and making any wee changes that you want. Chill out.

Played today on full greens. But jeez they were soggy. Nearly able to claim casual water on each one.

Shouldn't really have been open but it was nice to get out for the first time since before Xmas.

I agree with thecraw. If you are lucky enough to get out on proper greens enjoy them. If they are on temporary greens just think how well they will putt in the warmer weather. Winter golf is about making do with the shorter hours and differing conditions but is also the time to make the swing changes that with practice may result in handicap cuts come the new season

Up at our place we very rarely play on winter greens. In fact this year they didn't cut any on any of the courses. Anyway because of the snow and freezing conditions they closed the place last week. I rang on Friday and they said they would be open again on Saturday but............

WITH NO BLOODY HOLES!!

Basically they decided that the greens were too frozen so they would use temps, but the ground was so hard they couldn't cut the holes!

My course has barely been on greens since 03/12 and by barely I mean 3 or 4 half days.

Funny though how when it comes to ladies day, ladies medal, mixed pairs or anything involving the ladies, the greens are back on.

Shame the gents dont get the same preferential treatment.
