Non Conforming ..... would you buy?

Most irons that are non-conforming today were perfectly conforming prior to the groove rule of 2011. None of Jack Nicklaus', Arnold Palmer's, Lee Trevino's, are any other player's irons prior to 2011 would be conforming today. So in the end, unless you are playing in the US Open who cares if they are conforming.

Very sweeping statement.

My irons from 1990 conform to current rules because they weren't manufactured at the time that groove wars was going on - as were many of Jacks, Arnold's etc of that era.

When the manufacturers went all out on grooves, new regulations came in and, after some discussions there were acceptable periods of continued use in respect of those for both elite/professional (now expired) and other players (2024).

The use of new non conforming clubs coming on the market now is a completely different issue - for whatever reason that they are non conforming.

I buy new clubs if I feel they’re going to help me bring my scoring down. I wouldn’t waste that much on something I couldn’t really use.

In order for a club to appear on the R&A list the manufacturer has to submit a sample to the R&A.

If they do not intend to sell in R&A governed regions they probably would not bother.

I wouldn't buy it as I am comfortable with my current Mizuno wedges.
However I am not sure I would spot a non- conforming club if someone else pulled one out of their bag. TBH the level I play at I wouldn't be bothered anyway.

You would definitely notice these, their stopping power is unbelievable. I spoke to someone at the R&A and they have told me they haven't received a sample but will be requesting one due to a few concerns he had. We have 3 players planning on using them when our qualifying competitions start in a couple weeks. Should I be bothered?

I wouldn't buy it as I'd have to have a back up for comps. Plus, by having so much extra spin changing back would just mess with consistency imho.

Keep your dialogue going with the R&A and escalate if they appear in a comp (doesn't need to be a Q comp) by asking for a ruling to apply to a specific incidence.

Apologies for reviving an old thread(esp since it's my first post)but I've found this : http://www.usga.org/InfoClubsDB/ResultDisplay.aspx?val=Smithworks Golf (3)
It's seams according to uspga they are conforming. Nothing on r&a site.
Just realised those are the Elite X model referred to on the video as in the pipeline - which are have a different face, designed to conform.
Now, if the R&A have an issue with those, that's a different ballgame but for your purposes you should be able to start out with Elite X model OK, other one isn't.

no i wouldnt buy one but people who do could still use in in comps. Yes it cheating but i dont check the bags of people i play with so could easily get away with it. unless it has non conforming written all over it. Bloke at my old club still used a TM 580 xd driver in all comps until last year and they were banned ages ago.

I bought a non conforming Dunlop wedge from sports direct for 12quid to see how it worked. big aggressive grooves. stopping power from the rough.

Now you mention it, I don't even know where i put it. was worth 12 quid as an experiment.

Yes you are right Duncan. I have heard back from the r&a and they have received the elite x models which after a few itirations are now conforming(now on r&a site) and I know the players at my club are using the other ones. Question is should I bother doing anything or let them get on with it. Hate cheating but also don't want to come across as a spoilsport.

If you aren't on the committee I would simply have a quiet word with them away from any competition issues, along the lines of 'I see they have now bought out a version of those that can be used in competitions; are you planning to get those or just use different wedges if you play in a club comp?' Even better if you can include others in the discussion without appearing confrontational!
Alternatively you raise it as a general point with the committee outside competition and leave them to handle it - something along the lines of having noticed players using non conforming clubs in practice; what steps are they taking to ensure that they aren't used in competition?
If you don't do that you will end up in a difficult situation if you are playing in a comp and they are there with illegal clubs - saying something then will have consequences, and be more stressful all round. Not saying something would be stressful to you, and unfair on the entire field. Without getting into the who's going to know discussions it also opens you up to penalty.

whats to stop you buying one of the M6 drivers with the skimmed face and using it, no one would be any the wiser?
