Well after my rant that went down like a lead balloon with most people here last week, I have decided to bite the bullet and join a club. fed up of not being able to play anywhere half decent on weekends. Newbury & Crookham golf club http://www.newburygolf.co.uk/ .

The club is less than 5 minutes drive from my house, the course is fantastic (my fav round here by quite a way) its just shy of 6000yrds and par 69, so while on paper sounds potentially easy, its far from it. a proper thinkers course with trouble lurking on every hole.

Played there yesterday after speaking with the pro late last week, he allowed us on as a taster. Well teeing off at 9.20AM on a Sunday, it was dead! i was amazed at how quiet it was, which is ideal. As mike will say i'm sure, the average age of the membership of the club is quite old, that's what they are trying to address so midweek its busy with the retired folk, but weekends its perfect for me!

Weekly stablefords, plenty of comps, few good reciprocal course too.

I have joined on an "associate" membership, so discounted heavily but limited to 20 rounds per year, after that you pay a discounted green fee which suits me well. But finally a proper handicap and some competitive golf! Also 2 of my mates are joining too and i know a few members there already! so looks like its gonna be fun!

Now to get the paperwork sorted today and get out there for 3 rounds ASAP with card in hand to get my first official h'cap! I have no idea what i will get, i track every round online and use that as my "bounce" handicap, so that's 17. the way i played yesterday it might go higher! but i have played well round there before, so hoping to play well with the card in hand for real!

Wasn't that what you were after on a Green fee basis?

And what many were saying was impossible?

Would they have allowed you?

Does seem to fit with your needs though! Just get those cards in irrespective of the scores - they only use the best for handicap! Just remember that things can be different with a card in the pocket!

Give it 2 weeks and you will be maoning about stupid visitors being allowed on "your" course :D

Good luck at the new club, exciting times

well done, I'd imagine you'll use those 20 rnds up PDQ especially with nice weather down your way.

Now get a decent Handicap-IER :smirk:

Getting on the course was down to the fact i had a chat with the pro about joining, 2 from the 4ball are also joining this week, so wise work from the pro!

Good work fella, looking forward to my invite:D

you are welcome any time Nick, let me know when you are free. Monday and Wed mornings work best for me, but pretty flexible.

The course variety in being a nomad is ok but you can't beat having a settled base with the many obvious advantages outweighing that variety. Flexible membership options are a great idea too, they could probably help a number of ailing clubs if they could be a bit more forward thinking.

Used to live about 2 minutes from Newbury and Crookham and always thought it was a very pleasant course, usually immaculately presented. Looks like they've done a fair bit of work on the Racecourse course, played it once and found it a bit

mind you in fairness that was 20 years ago  and IIRC it was just 9 holes inside the track

The racecourse is what it is, to be fair the 6 holes they built outside of the racecourse are quite pleasant. its all being torn down though, David Wilson Homes are making sure of that! The racecourse golf side is being run by N&C these days, its going to be a nine hole academy course with practice facilities and a new driving range, so the future looks good! they are working on linking the 2 physically to allow the N&C ground staff access from a central "hub" its actually only about 1km between the 2 courses as the crow flies.

I could have sworn i pm'd you a couple of weeks ago. I said to rich I'd set one up when he gets back from his hols in magaluf.

I'll sort one out in the next couple of weeks
