today i was playing with a friend and he played his second shot on a par 5 towards the green, he mis hit it and it went behind a tree, at no point did we think it would be lost, so he never played a provisional, we walked up to where we thought it would be to realise it werent anywere to be seen??
could he have went back and dropped a ball with penalty or does he have to scrub the hole??
we were playing stableford

Lost ball so you proceed under that rule. Play a ball from the spot it was last played under penalty. He be playing his 4th shot from the spot he last played

Next year there's going to be a local rule clubs can introduce allowing players to drop on the fairway level with where the ball was lost, playing 4, as if they had played a provisional. If you're new to golf you should get a hold of a rule book, they're free, & study the basic rules, certainly before playing in competitions.

In fact, buy a copy of this month's Golf Monthly & you'll get a Rules book with it.

That Local Rule is not in the Player's Edition

What begs the question is why would you opt to not play a provisional if you are in any doubt (no matter how small) that you will be able to locate your ball?
Take a provisional, find the 1st ball...no harm done.
Take a provisional, unable to find 1st ball...no need to take the walk of shame.
My regular playing partner is adverse to taking a prov unless he is 100% certain that the previous ball is lost and it frustrates the hell out of me. Despite being a social round, I do not sit comfortable with him then taking a drop in the vicinity of said lost ball rather than walking back to previous position.

When comparing notes with him at the end of the round simply say 'Of course your real score would have been ....'
