ok, so i really can't hit my driver!!! like, not at all, just doesn't work!!
so......realistically how much of a disadvantage am i at, with only using irons and rescue clubs?
thanks

suppose its down to where you are playing.. i played at a course today where i only used my driver about 3 times!!

If you can use a 3 wood then i wouldnt say your losing out too much imo anyways!! :)

Last 3 rounds I've played I have deliberately left my driver in the car and my scores have been coming down. It just gets me into way too much trouble. If I score double figures at a hole you can be sure it started with a driver or maybe 2 if first goes oob.

I played the Leicestershire Golf club a while back and played irons and 3 woods all day, only used the driver in the 2nd round and well found lots of rough, as its a course with no par 5's.

Even playing at Thorpe Wood in peterborough i have used only iorns and woods and played just as well, as i do with the driver in play.

But really its all about hitting the big stick, and leaving your playing buddy 50+ yrd behind.

playing at bath, normal mixture, mostly par 4s around 300-450 yds., i hit my 4 iron about 175 yds off the mats/winter tees. and 3 wood about 200......

As a junior I never used a driver and my regular playing partners were both single figures, I was off 11.6 at my lowest. I played my best golf in them days and at most was only ever 20 yards behind my 2 playing partners, but fairways hit was near on 100%. I still reckon good golf can be played without a big stick although there is a lot to be said for a put the button peachy drive.

dont use driver either as cant hit it straight.

I was struggling with my woods and hybrids on sunday so I have decided to try irons only next round (shortish course)

lessons going to be booked for hitting the big dog and plenty of range time as I am taking 2 shots sometimes just to get to my mates tee shots grrrrrr

I suppose it depends on what games you are playing. If it's just a social game with your mates off the yellows I don't think it will be too much of a disadvantage. If however you play and want to win matches and tournaments from the whites there will be certain holes that you will need driver to reach for par and birdie chances. One thing to rememeber of course that the driver is not alaways going the best play on any given par 4 or 5 and it is better to play a hybrid or even iron if it is a tight fairway or a short dogleg.

Have you taken lessons to improve your swing or just been confused will all the little tips that are flying around out there?

agree, just because there might be a long par 5, doesnt always mean hitting a driver 250-280 yds will be best........
i think il stick to what im playing at the mo........no, not had any lessons YET on driver work......had 2 on iron play, set-up, grip etc. next lesson is an on-course lesson, sure that will help with planning how to play each hole etc......

Disagree as that is what a handicap is for. Play every hole as a par 5 and achieve it and you've shot 90 and that is going to be competitive for a lot of mid high handicappers in a lot of comps. It means that you don't have to use driver on long par 4's or the par 5's and can focus in keeping it in play, laying up and the hoping for an up and down. What you lose with 6 or 7's on some longer holes (most players have some bad holes) you can get back with par 3's and pars on the shorter par 4's
