No claims discount protection in car insurance ??

Problem is though Willie, as I understand it, it's the NCD that's "protected", not the premium. Any incident or claim, whether or not no fault, and they are likely to put your premium up. Once they are aware of any incident they may well consider you a greater risk so want more. Like bookies and casinos, the house never loses.

Just what I was going to say. Any claim by any named driver puts an X on a box and an opaque premium on top of what it would have been no-claims protection or not - but I would still pay it

Car insurance is a very competitive market. If you shop around you won't get ripped off. Each company has a team of underwriters that set the prices based on their customer database and the type of clients they want to attract hence you might get quotes from 2 different companies that are £250 and £2000. It's not a rip-off and anyone saying it is clearly doesn't understand how it works. I used to work for a major insurance underwriter.

Exactly. A very competitive market and not a rip off. Plenty of choice and the myriad of variables that each firms bean counters use each year can change quickly. So essential to shop around each renewal

So why do companies drastically reduce their own quotations for exactly the same product when you phone them up and mention that you have x quotes for x less?

Perhaps because then you are dealing with a person, not an automated computer algorithm.
Knowing someone very close to me who deals works in the car insurance sector, it's fair to say nearly everyone sees car insurance as a means to make money/something crap good/ or just avoid and lie.

So it’s the algorithm that’s trying to rip us off, not the nice people at the nice insurance company?

they are all businessess and choose how and what they want to target. Discussions, especially at renewal leave a lot of scope for wiggle room - probably because many people just renew and hence these people in effect subsidise others who do more homework. Hence, you have to put effort in and push if you want the good deal

Exactly, preying on the elderly and vulnerable.

Currently with Halifax.
Just found a quote with Dial Direct for £135 with breakdown cover included so think I'll go with that one
If Halifax have offered you a decent renewal price, then I'd stick with them.
I had to make a claim in June (rear-ended by a truck) and Halifax were absolutely first class in the way they handled it.
(The only bad thing about the whole experience was the courtesy car provided by Enterprise was a Vauxhall Grandland X - what an absolutely hateful car!)
Once you've made a claim and had good service, it makes you think twice about moving.

If the renewal is within £20 of moving I find staying the less Hassle like you said for a service you know

Had a minor scrape, my fault, where I scraped a wall as my side sensor did not work. I thought it would be a couple of hours’ job, little did I know and was quotes £480 to £540 which I could not believe.

I phoned Admiral, really unhelpful, and they wanted to know everything which I told them. no injuries nobody involved, no damage.

My NCB is protected 2 claims allowed in 3 years and NCB will stay intact. I have a £350 excess.

However the gripe was that by telling them I have been penalised and my premiums will probably increase although the person would not commit and was not interested. Honesty is the best policy!!!

My question to your more experienced guys is: Is it worth paying the £130 (480-350) or should I go with The Insurance Co?

I can afford the £130 but from you more knowledgeable guys are my premiums likely to increase more in the long term? I could ask how long is a piece of string!,

Now you have told them (which you legally are suppose to) you are stuck anyways as they have updated your risk file

Did you proceed in making the claim?

If you don’t make a claim it should not affect your future premiums.

If you can afford the repair then I would do that. Unless a repair was more than double my excess then I would look to avoid making a claim as you will be penalised far more over than that in premium shock.

Greg

the lady at Admiral said it is likely to affect future premiums.

If you tell them anything (which you have to legally but many don't) your risk file is updated

I made this mistake years ago when someone rear ended me and paid for the damage and I informed my insurance company

Went down as an accident no claim made but still put my risk up

Looking at it from their point I still scraped a wall. They are not going to take into account my sensor did not work!

Top tip when renewing your insurance. Check on the aggregator sites for a better quote, if you get a cheaper one when you ring your current company and ask them if they can do better NEVER tell them what you have found online. Just ask them for their best quote. If you tell them they will only match it, if they don't know what they have to beat they will offer their best price.
